I’ve DMed a few campaigns but it ends up early on making some of my players godly, while some have none above a 12.
I know in the players handbook it recommends giving a set of stats to use, but I was wondering if there was a rule or way you have a certain number of points that you separate into each stat?
Ad a DM you decide ability score generation method wihin parameters as you want. You can even use lower standard arrays, less than 27 point buy, or 3d6 instead of 4d6drop the lowest. if you want.
We play a game of Yahtzee before every campaign to get out the silliness and then we point buy. I like it because:
No Mary Sue/Marty Stus who got lucky once and coast on that throughout a campaign that could last years
No Mary Sue/Marty Stus who have no room for growth because they're already maxed out when their adventure starts
No severe underachievers who beg the DM for a reroll
No severe underachievers orchestrating character suicide so they get to roll again
No severe underachievers just slowly losing interest because they're not good at anything

No, good roleplayers make good roleplay. You can accentuate faults and play up strengths regardless of your stats. Someone with an 8 INT can have just as much fun roleplaying a dummy as someone who rolled a 5.
But if your table likes it, more power to you. It's just not for me.

Any ideas?
The optional score generation methods are in the PHB chapter 1, section 3. The standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Point but us a little more complicated, but not too hard. It’s in that same section.
Ok thanks! I completely didn’t read that section on point buying.

Point build is not perfect, but it's a lot more balanced than rolling stats.
