What are some monsters, other than kobolds and skeletons, that are good for first-level characters? I am having trouble finding some.
Kobolds and Goblins. You are basically looking for creatures that use a dagger. Anything else and you have to be specific about how long it is going to take the party to kill the monster and how much damage the party can do to the creature.
Take a Gnoll for example. It has 22 hp, nearly double what any PC is going to have. Its two main attacks a spear and longbow can one shot any of the PCs. So if you have 4 pcs against 4 gnolls, a bad roll on the PCs part and a good roll on the gnolls part, is giong to quickly end with a TPK.
You are going to want to stick with creatures that have a 1/8 CR. The boss can have a 1/4 CR. Any creature you use needs to use a d4 for damage. (The boss should be able to safely use a d6 or d8). The AC of your party matters. Most of the party is probably going to be around 13-16. So most of your attacks are going to hit the PCs even with Kobolds. You want to make sure the PCs can quickly get rid of some of the monsters, so they need 8hp or less. (A boss can safely have more hp)

Normal: Bandits, zombies, goblins.
Unique: Sahuagin, gnoll, kuo-toa, mephits.
Weird: Bullywug, modron, (also kuo-toa), myconids.
There's definitely more, but that's just a semi random list of monsters that you could throw at first level characters.
I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
You can make a nerfed version of another tougher monster. Anyway here are some 1/8-1/2 monsters.
