Hello all. This is my first post here, and I am in your care.
I am currently running my first ever campaign as a DM, and I need help with a scenario that has come up. My players did were not given any special or magic items at character creation qnd I want to rectify this. This is the scenario:
The characters have basically been taken hostage. They were stripped of their gear and placed in cells. An npc will be helping them escape, along with returning their gear. What are some good generic items he could gift a part of 3rd-4th level characters? I want to include a mix of items usable in and out of combat. I have looked at resources, but they were either too extensive for me to use or didn't have any descriptions.
If you have either a resource or a suggested list, I would appreciate it forever.
You could give them static stuff, or maybe things fitted to their classes. Like a stealth character could use ball bearings or maybe a grappling hook. A wizard may want ink wells, pens, paper, and some flask like oil. Static wise, I'd say string, rope, rations, maybe healing potions, and or simple weapons like daggers.
I'm all for Homebrew items. Thanks for the suggestions. The characters have most of generic items that a person of that class would have, such as grappling hook, components, writings utensils, rope, ect. I'm really looking for simple, not over powered, but still kind of cool magic tools to give them.
Something more convenient, although more of a silly item I made, is called a Many Pebble. It has 3 command words that are light, message, and guidance. Each one casts the cantrip, and it has 2 charges that recharge each dawn. It's magic, helpful, and far from overpowered, plus just looks like a little pebble.

For 3rd or 4th level characters, the following are good:
If you are okay with homebrew, I have some items I made when I ran Dragon Heist, which is the same level range

Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.
