I attempted to give a custom unarmed strike to a homebrew race, just to change the damage type, but it doesn't actually do any damage unless it's used by a monk.
It doesn't look like a damage die was set for the action itself and it doesn't look like there's a modifier to reflect that damage. For reference, here's what Aarakocra looks like (in order to have it reflect on the character sheet):
Of course if you want the damage die to scale, you can do so by utilizing "Level Overrides" on the same page.

I wanted it to just be straight damage like the standard unarmed strike, I only wanted it to use a different damage type.

Enter a value of 1 into the field "fixed value" so that the attack does 1 damage.
