"We should be getting somewhat close to the weapons, but Talon will have to....whoa!"
Mark stops short when he sees the birds. He watches as the one assets dominance, then turns to the rest of the group.
"Let me try something."
He turns back to the birds, and brings his thoughts back to the fight with the cat. As he does so, he focuses on the feeling he had towards the end when he thought he might be able to communicate with the cat. Channeling that energy, Mark casts Speak with animals
To the bird: "Hello....I was hoping you may be able to assist me and my friends"

Talon isn't sure how dangerous the birds are, sure they are big, but their feet seem to be ill suited for slashing and grasping, he'd wage his talons can do more than their feet.
Blue, you notice that they are carving chunks out of the washed up bodies, the curved, oddly hooked bills catching your notice. They may be scavenging for now, but you doubt they'd hesitate to turn those on living prey if they thought they could take it.
Guy is suspicious that they even are birds. They aren't flying, are they?
Big Un goes up for a size comparison... turns out they are about his size... and they react poorly to his approach, the flock stalking forward in long loping strides.
Mark speaks up in a series of squawks, that causes them to pull up a distance from your group, hopping backward in the sand. The dominant one squawks back at him.
He hears:
"MY Beach! MY mates! MY food!"
The subordinates bob their heads.
You may attempt to speak to it further, with a roll for Animal Handling at disadvantage.

If yes, he would say in their language: "Pardon his manners, my feathered friends. The bare skinned means no disrespect, but he does not know how to express it. We would, of course pay for our passage and for disturbing you from your exquisite meal." He pulls out the gemmed buttons to show them, making them move in his hand to catch the sun.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Big Un can tell that they definitely aren't vultures, they are much larger, for one, and seem to be flightless.
Blue can make out details of them, the beaks look particularly nasty, seemingly evolved for slashing and tearing.
Mark tries squawking at the birds again. Talon isn't able to make out the meaning any more than the rest of you.
They give out an angry squawk and begin stalking towards you.
"MY FOOD! MY MATES! MY WOODS!"

LOL!
Big'Un in his confused state will just walk up to the birds and get a closer look and also to see how they react to someone approaching them.

Mark takes a slow step backwards so he can speak to the group without turning his back to the birds.
Quietly, he says "The one that appears to be the leader doesn't seem too happy with us being on his beach. This may turn ugly, so be prepared.
He slowly lowers the sled he's carrying, and as he rises he moves his arms into a position to quickly ready his shield and axe if need be.
To the birds: "We don't want your food, or to hurt you or your mates. We're just trying to get to the other side of these woods."
