Hi, so elves can long rest in 4 hours if I'm not mistaken due to the Trance race feature, so how long does an elves short rest take? would this also be reduced to 4 hours?
On a similar note, does the 4 hour rest from trance restore class features that require long rest as well?
Trance change the duration of long rest to 4 hours instead of 8. Short rest still last 1 hour. There is an official ruling in Sage Advice Compendium addressing this question;
Does the Trance trait allow an elf to finish a long rest in 4 hours? If an elf meditates during a long rest (as described in the Trance trait), the elf finishes the rest after only 4 hours. A meditating elf otherwise follows all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed.
I always thought it a strange mechanism. In mixed race parties, it means the Elves stand the watch while others complete their rest. At least if you trust the elves.

It is just another advantage of WotC's favorite race. They get 4 extra hours a day for activities. There is a lot of shenanigans that can lead to.

Aren't humans WotC favorite race? With the variant you can litteraly get +2 to ability scores, a feat, and a skill proficency.

Nah, they are min-maxer's favorite. The best thing about the free feat is that it can be anything, but in a vacuum is not more powerful than say fey ancestry and darkvision. As for ASIs and skills, most races get more.
The elf gets: +3 to ability scores, a skill proficiency, resistance to a condition (immunity to an niche but dangerous effect), darkvision, and 4 extra hours of downtime a day. All before their subrace which usually gives 4 weapon proficiencies and some useful traits like innate spells and an extra language.
A variant human is only as good as the build that needed an extra feat. An elf is always a good race.
Do I need to explain the difference between a tweet from 2015 and an officially compiled list of rulings from the publisher last updated in 2019, and which of the 2 you should hold over the other?

Yeah, but I still like that ruling better. It says “After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.” And the rules for Long Rests says “A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8 hours long, during which a character sleeps for at least 6 hours and performs no more than 2 hours of light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch.” IMO, their Long Rest should also still include at least another 2 hours of light activity (eating, pooping, maintaining equipment, etc.) and therefore take at least 6 hours to complete.
The new text in MMotM is slightly different and makes the intent more clear.
That is going to be a mixed bag. A lot of underwhelming races got a much needed buff (shifters and genasi for example), but quite a few others got nerfs (like Aaracokra and Yuan-ti) which I'm not going to say didn't need it a little, but still.
The relevant bit to trance is "You don't need to sleep and magic can't put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness."
Eladrin also have a specific line in their trance feature that says they can change seasons after their trance. Eladrin also do not have their elf weapon training, but all three elves in the new book get the ability to choose two weapon or tool proficiencies at the end of a trance.
The new text makes it clearer that the entire long rest (and not just the sleep part) that can be done in 4 hours, and doesn't conflate an 8-hour rest to 8 hours of sleep. Also, it makes it clear that you retain consciousness (instead of semiconsciousness), so while you might not have the ability to to just anything during your trance, you could probably notice threats, etc.

I'm really glad that eladrin changing seasons will be in the text of the trance trait tbh. It's always been in the game that they could do that, it was just buried in the flavor text instead of the rules text for some reason.

Sure, because Elves needed a buff, they were never chosen because of how underwhelming they are. 🙄
Yea I agree that there really was no need for it but at least it is a clearer language and an established principle. Reborn have the same sort of feature - "You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness.".

Elves can long rest in 4 hours, and gain all the benefits of 8 hours of sleep (that is to say all their long rest features recharge).
They still take 1 hour to short rest, as that doesn't require sleep.

Wizards need that extra time to scribe found spells into their spellbooks.
thanks for the help :)

HERE.Nope, elven favoritism has existed in the game since... 2nd edition at the very least.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Also, according to this, elves still do need 8 hours to complete a long rest, it's just that only 4 of them are only sleeping.
