My PCs are in Waterdeep and part of their campaign is to hustle for money and get integrated into the city. To accomplish that I'm concocting a slew of quests that range from easy to do roleplaying for small pots of gold to near one-shot side quests.
Among those came an idea for the 2 or 3 more athletic-y PCs – a relay race! Like for charity or the like, but maybe the winner of the race gets a cash prize too. Has anyone done something like this in a game, and/or have ideas that might make it fun and challenging? As imagined it'll be a series of athletics and acrobatics skill checks, but I could imagine ways to make it so the PCs in the race and those on the sidelines are participating in some fashion or responding to some event/activity.
The others could certainly help beforehand with things like Bardic Inspiration or Longstrider.
Could also be fun to have some kind of rival faction attempting to sabotage the race. The non-participants are trying to stop the saboteurs or save bystanders while the racers deal with the obstacles or whatever other challenge the sabotage poses to them.

I was thinking just that – while some PCs are in the race, other PCs are supporting them (and maybe clandestinely since they shouldn't be) while adverse NPCs are either trying to impede the race/benefit their people, or using the race as a cover for some act that the PCs can respond to.
