I play a purple tiefling, and I made my character before I really read into dnd stuff. So when I was looking at the tiefling page I was like "oh hey, this guy's not red. I think I like purple better" and now uh here we are
It doesn’t matter, you can make whatever tiefling you’d like. Purple is better anyways.

Purple is almost always better for just about everything except fruity candy (because artificial grape flavoring is 🤮).
I kind of hate how the lower planes and everything in them seems to be an expanse of red, orange, and brown with only occasional splashes of anything else, so by all means bring on the disco ball of tieflings.
How is this even something anyone cared enough about to post on it? They’re make believe. If someone wanted a sky blue pink Tiefling, who effing cares enough to say otherwise?!?
The same people who'd have a cow over the fact that my tiefling doesn't have horns and a tail.
I mean, to a certain degree I'd argue that's valid if the DM is sticking more with the default tiefling look in a setting. Quibbling over skin color- particularly on a race that can already do several fantastic options- is excessive, but to a certain point your character build does need to conform with the DM's interpretation of what races look like in a setting. That's just part of the give and take of TTRPG's. Part of the tiefling concept is that they clearly stand out for the Infernal influence on their bloodline, so a DM enforcing that in their setting does potentially have merit. Now, if the setting isn't cleaving hard to the PHB or other lore that emphasizes that, less of an issue.
My issue is that they retconned the lore. I despise retcons, and would point out the variant tiefling rules. Hopefully the horns and tail nonsense is completely removed with the new PHB. The "look" for tieflings is wotc trying to do lore, and not being very good at it as per usual. they are pretty great with crunchy things, but when it comes to lore things, they leave a lot to be desired.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

It's a little more varied based on the subrace you pick according to the UA, but it still calls for horns in two of the three options, and Infernals get the tails too. I doubt they're going anywhere.

I think that if it helps everyone enjoy the game more do whatever the heck you want to. Make a green teifling with cucumbers for horns and a dragon head for a tail. As long as it doesn’t effect the stats of the character then I have no problem if you do it.

really, this is the answer. WOTC needs to provide the crunch. Give me a mathematically balanced racial option. Let me figure out the rest, and don't make me feel like I am "cheating" because I don't accept your retcons/lore.

This raises an important question: Are purple tieflings artificial grape flavor?
If they are, they're presumably safe from creatures with bite attacks.
That’ll be my newest houserule.

I bet they taste like those grape jollyranchers specifically, or like grape fruitsnacks

Guess I will have to keep using legacy versions *shrug*
EDIT: Just went back and re-read it. Those features are common, not mandatory.
