they Changed the end of the features normal wording to make it more broadly applicable. features like this sometimes say when you fail a check. Since it says before the roll is resolved instead of failure, it can be used on initiative. Initiative is a weird ability check because it’s set up like a contest, but RAW there’s no failure.
The thri-kreen secondary arm feature will allow a path of the beast barbarian to two weapon fight with hand axes, make two claw attacks, and wield a shield while recklessly attacking. I think I like it.
The bite attack heal makes sense cause thri-kreen eat humanoids.
The tail attack could be reflavored into maybe some sort of scorpion tail maybe?
The level 10 feature could be a burst of Psionic rage?
14th level feature could be the party allies accepted into a swarm.
a thri-kreen rogue with the sentinel feat and gunner feat would be free to wield a ranged weapon in their primary hands and duel wield light weapons with their secondary hands. No need to juggle weapons. Gunner feat and sentinel feat could be used to make sure they can sneak attack a target far away with a ranged weapon and steady aim, while also being able to make attacks of opportunity or use the sentinel feat for sneak attack again off turn.
a thri-Kreen caster wouldn’t have to worry about component rules as much with 4 hands.
a thri-kreen ranger could potentially climb up a surface with hands and feet while simultaneously being able to properly use ranged weapons with the other two hands.
The Autognomes and Plasmoids are nice. The Giff and Astral Elves are too similar to races we've already seen to really be interesting. Hadozee are okay, nothing spectacular.
And I want to like the Thri-kreen but I really feel that the lack of being able to wield a short sword in every hand and go full "will it blend?" makes the idea of a four-armed character less interesting that it ought to be. Though I suppose you could combine a two-handed weapon with a light weapon via the Dual Wielder feat. Guess that's not exactly stronger than just taking PAM.

New UA that i would love to play test and DNDBeyond doesn't do UA content on the site anymore. Very Sad. I only run games online with my players and this would have been a great tool to test.

Dual wielder feat to attack with a two handed heavy weapon for extra attack and then a 1d6 weapon as a bonus action seems interesting. Idk if +1 AC is worth trading out reliable opportunity attacks, but maybe if your reaction is already reliably spoken for?
dual wielder feat for AC bonus stipulates a separate melee weapon in each hand though… so no AC bonus. Holding a two handed weapon does not satisfy that requirement. It’s interesting that as written the “dual wielder” feat AC bonus requires all 4 hands to have separate weapons… “quad wielder” feat.
secondary arm light weapon wielding limitation isn’t lifted by dual wielder feat either, so no 1d8 weapon in off hand.

Dual Wielder has absolutely no effect on your ability to take reactions. You burn your bonus action to make an attack with your off-hand weapon, but that's it.

I like the point about how it looks like they're combining spelljammer and Planescape. All the races seem to be from spelljammer, but the Astral elves and the title "travelers of the multiverse" definitely feels more Planescape. I like it because honestly I've never been a huge fan of the crystal sphere lore.

If it were an attempt to combine with Planescape, I'd have expected to see actual Planescape races like rogue Modrons or Bariurs. Not yet another flavor of elf.

Pretty sure Astral Elves are elves, guys. You're jumping to a lot of conclusions based on what comes down to a formatting choice - maybe they just didn't want to throw Elf into the UA with Astral Elves as a subrace. It has every feature of the base race. It's a subrace. The real takeaway is that Trance is being reworded.
I wonder if this content is intended for one book or if they're bundling all the races for 2-3 products into one UA. Will be interesting to see.
Got really excited when I heard about this Spelljammer aspect of D&D. I wanted to make a few characters with these new concepts, mainly the Plasmoid and Giff. But it looks like there doesn't seem to be an auto character creator function for this in D&D Beyond at the moment. For the more experienced of you in this forum, how would I properly go about putting a Plasmoid or Giff character in Beyond say via the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to make a Player Character?

My bet is a single book, likely Spelljammer. Thri-kreen is the only race here that would fall into Dark Sun. If they were testing for that setting too, they would likely have Mul, Half Giant, and a subrace option for Halflings and Elves on the list as well.

I would say "multiverse" is coming out in WotC penned announcements, product, and UA with a higher frequency than in the past. Multiverse, to them, seems to connote both "extraplanar" and different prime material worlds (and I guess we might be getting a more "canonical" look at this metaphysics when Fizban's drops). So I could see something more cementing "multiverses" into the game, starting with the MMM book (which I don't think these races will be part of) followed up by some sort work or book (where these races as well as Spelljamming and planar hopping techniques will appear) explaining how PCs can move about the multiverse as a setting, combining aspects of Spelljammer, Planescape and other modes world jumping (like the blue veil dream), and then give those modes some 'stakes' through some sort of multiplanar adventure.
Basically, everyone will be able to play D&D as Dr. Who in 2022, because Who and Two rhymes.

And Thri-Kreen did exist in Spelljammer, so it's really likely that this is all just for a Spelljammer (or Planejammer) book.

I was talking about the feat trade off. The dual wielder feat doesn’t interfere with reactions, but polearm master gives a new criteria for creatures to provoke opportunity attacks which drastically increases the likelihood you’ll make a reaction attack. It was about trade offs.
