I’m happy enough with the bard - whether you want to build your character as a skald/seidhr/shaman type (shaman is not a synonym for Druid or cleric, before anyone tries that one - drums and chanting for magical effect is a common enough shamanic practice the world over), a fast mouth/fast hands huckster who seems to be a bit more accurate than their cold-reading would normally allow, or a trad bard who had an accident in a crypt and lucked in to a ghostly source of stories, the archetype works.
Mechanically, I’d rather swap out mystical connection for a roll-twice and choose type mechanic at the end of each short rest - simply doing away with the cost of the Tales feature is a bit lacklustre. At level 14, I’d hope for having a better connection to my ghostly friends so I could reach for a celestial or friendly story, rather than just whatever. Much like wild magic sorcerers get some control over their wild magic at 14. (I also note the dragon story doesn’t require a saving throw - presumably because the expectation is that it’d be used on a friendly. If I drop that on a minion at the back of a mob, he’s going to have some unhappily toasty friends...)

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Form of Dread + OoC Paladin = Fun fun fun. I think they really didn't crosscheck this UA.
Well, all Unearthed Arcana includes the disclaimer that they don't account for multiclassing when they make these subclasses... if people really love the subclass flavor + mechanics, then they adjust the features to account for power or multiclassing.
I must say...this subclass, along with the "Genie" Warlock, both seem like the strongest candidates for official publication.

That may be, but there will be nothing left of this one if it's made official.
I want to multi class into warlock with my Barb. Can you use rage while transformed? Or transform while raging?
Form of Dread
Thanks
Nothing says you cannot, so yes you can indeed rage while under the benefits of form of dread, and it seems like a fun combination, just keep in mind that you cannot activate both on the same turn due to both needing an bonus action

Works with an OoV Paladin too. Especially a Fallen Aasimar one. 😉

Really? It feels like the abillity to have an constant connection with the spirit world regardless how how much you have rested is an perfect capstone, even if it is a bit op, you could even use it out of combat to roll over and over and over until you finally get what you want, like the whole point of the feature is that what spirits you Contact and what tales they tell you is out of your controll, once you meet a spirit you Will probably never meet that same spirit again, also presumably the Target of the dragon effect chooses what area the cone Will cover, thus letting them avoid toasting their friends, but in the future it Will probably just be restricted to willing creatures or something

yes thank you. Im running wild soul barbarian and will take some WL levels due to RPG aspects. This will be so much fun. If i would take it to lvl 10. Could use my orc feature to not drop below 0 after the explosion.
very cool. i could use this First round to cast an spell before raging on the next. Or two spells and use bonus Action for Rage at the end of Turn 2?!
I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but the more I read the spirits bard, the less I like the theme. I love the idea of a storyteller bard, but not a necromancer bard with a skull and ghost board. I would prefer a further look into stories and legends, not death and graves. Tell me you agree.

The Bard gives me vibes of spiritsts out of the 19th century. Holding seances conning the gullible. Not my thing.
Lol, that’s what I love about it!
Same. I like the concept a lot, I just don't like rolling on a random chart for class abilities.
I like that part too. The fact that the chart is already bounded by the size of the Inspiration Die is really clever, although I do think having the lower options drop off at higher levels would be nice. But it also reminds me of 2e in a way, but nowhere near as bad. Rubs my nostalgia the right way, but not too hard.
Don't have to read this thread rn but I have read the PDF and I LOVE the Undeath Warlock!!!!! I can't wait until it's here on DDB for us to build.

Just so long as we don't get a UA for THAC0, I think we're good.
