I enjoy Guiding Whispers in the idea that you can speak across to the rogue trying to disarm a dangerous trap that floats "you got this bro" in the air.
Otherwise, neither of these UA really appeal to me. They look cool on paper and the College of Spirits gives me a good idea to use it as a guest character for Curse of Strahd if someone wanted to be a * ***** * fortune teller in training. The undead warlock? Eh. The grave touched part is cool if you wanted to roll around slapping folk up with your pact weapon. It's a a strange hybrid of warlock-barbarian but cool in its own right but not one I'd ever use.
* **** * - This is a word relating to a certain group of people that exist in Ravenloft and are allowed to roam freely in Strahd's domain. Why is this even censored?
DDB censors that word because it's actually a racial slur. It's not common knowledge so I don't believe you meant it maliciously at all, but the real name for their ethnicity is the Roma people.
EDIT: Reading your comment, I believe you meant to refer specifically to the Vistani, which are based off the real-world Roma. There's been an ongoing conversation about how WOTC should deal with content based on real-world regions and ethnicities, which can get...a little messy.

Or Romani, or Rumney, or Travelers (among others) depending (as I understand it) on the preference of the specific clan. I have met a Traveler who disliked be referred to by other terms.

Actually no, it relates to IRL people. The group in CoS are called “Vistani.”
Bring back THAC0 if that would give AC meaning again.
But THAC0 sucked big hairy balls, when 3rd edition was released I looked at ascending AC loved it and converted my 2nd edition to it and sped up combat. I just couldn't stand anything else in 3rd at the time.
And do you prefer the to hit system of 3rd over the one in 5th? Because I do. And I prefer the thac0 system over 5th as well.
I don’t. I’ll take the 5e system over THAC0 any day.
Sorry but this edition lacks depth. It's a nice introductionary RPG and they finally got the warlock right and put a stop of most of the power creep of 3.5 but I'll take the previous versions, 2e, 3rd and 3,5 and Pathfinder over this. It's too bland and made for the most common denominator. And that's not a bad thing, it just isn't what I prefer. I'll keep on playing it as long as the groups I play with use it but when they go for another game I will gladly follow.
I’ll agree that 5e is a bit shallow compared to older editions, but I attribute that to a lack of significant player options beyond 3rd level without Multiclassing. The AC vs To Hit system of 5e seems infinitely preferable to me than THAC0.
okay so one of you just wants to bring back diffrent classes increasing attack bonus at diffrent rates with the highest having bonuses equal to your level + abillity score, wheras everyone else just wants to not do the ******* subtraction bullshit
I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but the more I read the spirits bard, the less I like the theme. I love the idea of a storyteller bard, but not a necromancer bard with a skull and ghost board. I would prefer a further look into stories and legends, not death and graves. Tell me you agree.
I completely agree. I see characters like Madam Eva as wizards, sorcerers or warlocks...I do not see them as bards at all.
That was my first reaction too, but then my opinion changed the more I considered it. Telling a Fortune is a lot like telling a Story, and that’s squarely in the Bard’s wheelhouse.
the spirit bard is the most bardy bard subclass in that it is so multifaceded, there is a lot of diffrent directions you can take this one subclass, and already bards were a pretty interesting choice for divination characters due to magical secrets and their vast spell list, somewhat decent healers and support characters, characters who could have some kind of connection to the wild and a fun gimmic for a necrodancer, and this subclass lets you focus on any of those things. The necromancy stuff makes sense becuase you are communing with the dead, and it allows the spirit seance feature to give you speak with dead and also potentially any Resurrection spell you and your party forgot to learn, and it could also give you chill touch which can help you put the dead back to rest and bestow curse which also makes sense. Bards are all about preserving stories for future generations and recalling the legacies of ages long gone, the art of life and death and the art of divinations are both fields already partially represented in the bard spell list

Yes. My preferences are indeed that a martial class should have a inherent better to hit with martial attacks than a Mage type. I'm not attached to the way thac0 worked I preferred the bonus to hit a fighter got from martial training.

Yes that's a big part of the problem. Hit lvl three and you're basically done. That is of course an exaggeration but it fits. You don't really have a lot of meaningful choices afterwards. And alignment of course. I like some of the new changes, for Paladin for example, but hate them for Priests.

yeah but now we have kind of shifted topic, switching to the THAC0 system would not add any more meaningful choices in combat or character creation, all it would do is make combat more complicated and make a lot of classes much weaker in combat depending on how you implement it

shure, it makes sense for an more focused combatant to be more skilled with the weapons they specialize with, but it also makes sense for an sorcerer who specializes in making their ray attacks as accurate as possible and an rouge who has trained with the dagger their entire life and knows exactly where to stike to deal the most possible damage to be just as accurate and skilled with their respective weapons as one who specializes in the greataxe

I don't care that some classes would be weaker in melee or (physical) ranged than martial classes, that's only logical. I also have no problem giving casters a bonus on their spells to equalise this. Like more spells without a save, like it used to be. Thac0 was part of an integrated system. Also more spells, not this paltry list we now have after 6 years. This edition is 6 years old and it doesn't really have that much content.
Please, stop with thaco, and keep on topic. Anyone have any ideas on what kind of races go well, or background etc? With this UA?
Half-Elf, Tiefling, Satyr, Yuanti, Changeling are the usual suspects for both of them. Like for all the Charisma based non Paladin classes. If you combine these UA classes with the UA feats Human Variant to take that sweet sweet broken Warlock feat at lvl 1.
I'm not talking stat wise, but thematically. I could see yuan ti spirits bard, or satyr.
Changeling goes well with the Bard as it screams huckster. Better than Satyr or Yuan-Ti. Satyr don't have the patience or the inclination to dabble with spirits. Yuan-Ti are not interested in spirits of meat.
for the spirit bard i think few races would fit better thematically than the aasimar, since they already have a tie to an otherworldly spirit that guides them, kenku always mimic others and never have a will of their own, making them seeking guidance from and trying to mimic the long dead and their feats of magic makes just about as much sense as anything else, tabaxi are always on the lookout for new experiences and have ever shifting obsessions, so getting a constant flux of new stories is something they would love, kobolds have an thing for dying for the good of their people, using the lore from volo's guide orcs posess some amount of ancestor worship, and an incredebly strange relationship with death, making them too an natural fit for this subclass

I am using the Playtest Material to create my Spirit Bard and it seems like it uses my spell slots to have the class spell features that should be included without using a spell slot. Is there something I am missing? Let me know if this is the wrong place to ask about this. I am kind of new.

Oh it's so much worse if you couple it with hex, it's 8d10 necrotic from eldritch blast, and 8d6 necrotic hex damage, add on agonizing blast and that's an extra 20 dmg. And this would happen EACH TURN.

No, it specifically states that it doubles adds one die, not all dice one of each die. You would have to pick either the d10, or the d6, not both.
Grave Touched
6th-level Undead feature
Your patron's powers have a profound effect on your body and magic. You don't need to eat, drink, or breathe. In addition, when you hit a creature with an attack and roll damage against the creature, you can replace the damage type with necrotic damage. While you are using your Form of Dread, you can roll one additional damage die when determining the necrotic damage the target takes.
That’s fine. To each their own.
