About to start a new campaign with friends. So far the party consists of: Champion Fighter, Open Palm Monk, Swarmkeeper Ranger, Twilight Cleric.
I have two character builds in mind, either Assassin Rogue to play-off the aggro of the Fighter and Monk and dish out the damage, OR go with an Armorer Artificer and play a tanky role with more spellcasting options in the thick of battle.
I'm feeling very torn as I have interesting character concepts for both builds. If you were me, which would you go for? (And don't throw other classes at me, I'm mainly interested in the two options I've set my mind on!)
I would go with either inquisitive rogue, wizard or artificer to fill in the niche of the information gatherer. I think this is often times easily overlooked. All those intelligence checks for things like arcana, history religion etc.
It's a blend of social and combat, probably not strongly balanced either way. Other than that it's being kept a little bit mysterious at this point.
Then I'd go Rogue. Probably not an Assassin, I don't like the archetype, but that's up to you. Armorer's an excellent class, but Rogues arguably tread that balance better.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
Definitely Rogue. There are already two tanks (really more of a tank and an off-tank), but having someone that can sneak around and do a lot of things with skills would be VERY useful to the party. Not to mention Traps and Opening Locks... and yeah, Assassin would be my last choice... just because it is so hard to use a lot of their tools. Scout is a very good choice... or, if you want some odd fun... the Soulknife brings a lot of variety if you want to always have a weapon.
I'd go with Wizard with Criminal or Charlatan backgrounds and say your a thief, take with spells that enable investigations (Identify, Detect Magic), subterfuge (Invisibility, Clairvoyance, Arcane Eye), discreet ranged damage (MInd Sliver, Shadow Blade), enable tracking (Mind Spike or if using the new feats Fey Touched to get Hunters Mark) and the usual spells to "Boing/Flip" yourself around the place (Misty Step, Dimension Door etc).

AOE damage and arcane spellcasting in general. Monks are okay at distributed damage, but it's pretty hard to compete with a well-placed Fireball.
Party face
Bard could cover 1 & 3 and at least bring arcane utility spells. Heck with Secrets they could cover 2 as well if you really needed it and were playing at that level. Rogue can cover 1 & 3 too, but would be better off choosing between INT or CHA. Wizard could cover 1 & 2 well.
Rogue might be my favorite class, but I'd probably bring a bard or wizard if my choice was based solely on party composition. But I don't really do that. Bring a character that you're excited about playing - a party can get by okay without plugging any of the above holes. Sometimes it's fun to play a game with a party that has to get creative because they don't have the obvious solution.

The reason I was inclined to the Artificer was for the offensive spell list that comes with it. Combined with taking the Magic Initiate feat I would've been kitted out for both close-up and ranged fighting.
That said, I've settled on the Rogue, with the adjustment that I'm going to go with Soulknife instead of Assassin as the class features are far more appealing. Now to flavour it for a Warforged...
Well if its a Warforged, how about taking a slightly different spin on its creation:
***
In a dark and forgotten laboratory an arcanist Mindflyer worked silently and studiously over a workbench and after eventually lifted a glowing crystal up and placed it into an ornate statue composed of interlocking plates of metal and stone. It's Phylactary was complete, the ritual was ready, soon it would become and Alhoon (mindflayer lich) and immortllity would be achieved. Months of ritual casting passed and the final ritual was complete the Mindflayers soul transferred to the phylactary and at the last second a wave of dread and foreboding passed through it and everything went dark. When the Mindlfayer opened its eye it was puzzled, it felt none of the power, mental or arcane, that it once had, it felt heavy and sluggish. It gazed around and saw the dry and dessicated remains of a Mindlfayer lying in some sort of ritual circle nearby. Recognition dawned on it, that it was its body, the ritual had failed and its essence was now bound to the statue. The soul of the mindflayer wailed and the statue housing the phylactery responded with a loud cry of anguish. As more time passed the Mindlfayer learned to fully animate the statue and move with some measure of silent grace, it found itself stripped of all the mental and arcane power that it once had but feels the tendrils of it reforming.
***
So assuming you are starting at level 3+, your former mindflayer powers manifest as the psychic blades and limited telepathis abilities of the soul knife class. You found your way to the surface and fell into helping others and honing the capabilities of your new form and the side effect of the process has changed your alignment to a more neutral outlook as you no longer feel the need to eat the brains of other creatures.
My only misgiving about that as a creation story is that I can't shake the image of the warforged looking and sounding like General Grevious from Star Wars.

The irony is that the original inspiration for the character was HK-47 from the Star Wars video games...

This is just me, but I play a high-level artificer and find it to be pretty limited in spell slots. I would toss a Lightning Bolt now and then, but didn't really do a lot of blasting until I got a Staff of Power. You get spells pretty late. It looks great on paper as an arcane caster and skill monkey - and it is a lot of fun - but managing your spells is very different from wizard in my experience and I don't think it checks 2 or 3 on my list.
At any rate, enjoy your Rogue! Soulknife looks like a lot of fun and I hope to try it out myself sometime.

I wouldn't care about the rest of the party as much as the campaign. Any info from the DM about what that will focus on?
