Hmmm... perhaps a nuclear reactor that constantly stops healing magic, makes people gain a level of exhaustion whenever they sleep, and if they attack it they take enough damage to outright kill them. And then make their adventure center around a bunch of these machines.

After a super-tough miniboss fight, the party opens a big fancy chest and there's... a stick inside. But it's actually a Stick, and they'll throw it away and behold their death against the next boss! >:)

I love it! Although, having it at the end of a super-tough miniboss would emphasize that the STICK is more important than it seems. Maybe have it sitting in a treasure pile behind a locked door?

I thought they would think that the miniboss would have done it as a trick, so that all their work was for no treasure. This scheme would be better in a more combat-oriented campaign.

YALL something sad happened today. i made a homebrew spider queen monster, yet for some reason i can't publish it. it says it has an external link, yet i have no idea how it would have an external link. so until i solve this problem i'll just have to tell yall about my masterpiece dungeon:
The City Of Spiders
in my homebrew world, there once was a city, that's name was lost to time. it was the magical home of the mysterious race known as the seekers. and was magically carved out from an entire mountain of Quartz, hence it's nickname, the Quartz city. once a king grew jealous of the wondrous city, and made a deal with the demon queen of spiders to wipe out the inhabitants. Lolth sent a hideous plague that would forever haunt the air of the city, as well as create a small infestation of spiders. the seekers retreated into the catacombs beneath the city to escape the plague, and the spider population grew... the city remains abandoned to this day, as the plague as well as the seekers' own enchantments kept the king away. if you manage to pass the teleporting mists of the swirling peaks and are not driven to insanity by the groves of silence, be prepared to meet your doom...
so, basically the air there is plague, and it looks spotless. like its only been abandoned for 5 minutes, and unless its night, the first ring of the city has not a spider in it. the second layer is what you probably imagined this place looking like when you read the title, choked with cobwebs, spiders everywhere, stuff like that. The third and final ring holds the palace. the palace looks like a giant spider egg cocoon from the outside, and from the inside its got the finest luxuries in the material plane. and in the throne room, sits the city's only inhabitant. Lionnel Valdez. lio is a sorcerer, and because of the eldritch plague, was gifted with incomprehensible powers. anyways, if you want to use this idea, its supposed to be end game stuff, and make sure the party fights things only on the home turf and MAKE sure they get stuck in some webs. truly diabolical, i know.
