Build A World. Here's how it works. Each person who answers the next post (who wants to parktake in this) names the next unanswered question of the below. And you can add flavor to it "XYZ is named ABC because DEF did TUV" to explain why something's named the way it is.
Name of a War (Holy or Mortal) that took place and was world changing:
In ages past, the world of Ylzaran was at peace, but in time it was consumed by war. For many centuries, the various continents were unaware of each other, but the Wood Elves of the continent of Tzerea discovered via their dark magics that others existed and they planned a voyage to the nearest continent, called Galvaros at that time. The Tzerea Elves came like fire and razed Galvaros and its people, leaving nothing but a land ripe for picking. They resettled the land and replaced the flora and fauna with their own, naming the land Ilbayet. The new rulers of this land brought ruin upon other, nearby continents, but they were stopped in their tracks by the Loden people of the eighth continent: Tenawae. It had been three generations since the elves conquered Galvaros (three elven generations; about 2500 years in this world), but the Loden had a single generation, for they were a long-lived people and they were wise and developed much great technology. They fought back against the Tzerea Elves, once Wood Elves, but now known as Llithay-re, Those Who Walk With Brimstone in their Hearts. This war became known as the War of Samner Grivold to the Loden, who fought alongside other humanoids, one who was named Samner Grivold, a Paladin devoted to Yzlaran. The remaining Tzerea Elves call it Vzit-im-shold: The Devastation War.
Name of the World: Yzlaran, after the God of Lands, without whom no grains grow and no firm land beneath us. the soil is his flesh, the stone his bones!
How Many Deities: 0. The gods have died. This is especially a problem in the case of Yzlaran, what with the soil being the flesh and the stone his bones and all that.

1. Loden, the longest lived race in the world, they live for thousands of human generations, as they are descended from the old gods, remnants of their past power. Guided by the wisdom of the stars, they created marvelous works and inventions that granted them ruler ship and power.
2. Llithay re elves: once peaceful wood elves who ruled the land of tzerea they found an ancient temple, deep in the heart of the forest. The eldritch inhabitants of this lost shrine taught them the dark magics, of brimstone and souls, of death and tyranny. They turned to war, and set out to rule everything, and if they couldn’t have that, raze the world to the ground
3. Kalthronians: a strange people each green creatures similar to goblins, but with the lower body of animals such as giant spiders and horses and octopi. They live under the rule of the elves, treated as little more than animals. They serve as beasts of burden and servants, their tasks menial and degrading.
4. Humans: though not widespread in the slightest, humans occupy a rank above everyone in Loden society. For even though they are weak, they are sly and cunning and through claiming descendance from Samner Grivold, the great human Paladin they have elevated themselves to almost godlike status though they cannot posses the spark of arcane magic, giving them no power now that the gods are dead and divine magic isn’t a thing.
5. Faerling: faerlings are small gnomish like creatures who once’s served in the fey courts. But, their greed overtook them and they stole from kumaiya, queen of the faeries. She banished them from the fey realm and onto the Prime Material. They were stripped of their beautiful butterfly-like wings and cast out. Luckily, a strong sense of community and teamwork allowed them to band together and establish order. Every year, all faerlings who would pass 50 years of life are sent into the deepest woods and must survive for a week, while also trying to kill each other. At the end of that week the ones remaining must gather the bodies and then perform an esoteric ritual where they bathe in the blood of those they killed, causing them to grow in size and to become part of the elite truikkethooltarn, the elders of faerlings society.

An additional piece of lore: There were once eight continents (see the war section) but two were destroyed by followers of Kuanon, even though he is dead.
I get the vibe of a dark, sword-and-sorcery kinda world, where only remnants of the gods remain and the death of the world has to be fought against with an abundance of magic and technology centralized in large cities. Maybe that necessary magic falls into the wrong hands. Maybe it's in the wrong hands already.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.
How I'm posting based on text formatting: Mod Hat Off - Mod Hat Also Off (I'm not a mod)
I laid out some basic rules to my players and then let them go, and went back every few months to collect more feedback (often at the end of a session). This is probably why my poor little world has so many weird ass things in it, is a kitchen sink style world, and isn’t as far off as I probably would half have made it left to my own devices.

We should publish a gazetteer on DM’s guild. Anyone else notice we’re almost to 100 pages? Wonder who will be the first post for the 100th page? Anyways…
question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game

As I understand things, they don’t allow you to publish new worlds (though I may be wrong). Because if they do, I have to fix the biomes and encounters/survival there, finish off the trade routes and shop prices, and then get the setting alone up in there, lol.
And then start a new one up. Maybe a “dark sun” style ruined world full of crazed literal minded nobles and a small band of folks flying a banner with three runes and a barred circle around them pushing back agains the vagaries of the day.
I can pop out settings like they were candy in around 3 months. It’s the rules shit and extra add ins that wear me down.
On the other hand, I could just start doing culture designs. Detailed cultures are kind of a needed thing in the game right now. Why haven’t I thought of that before?

question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game
My glorious mentor was Samm Van Kirk. He taught me everything I know about D&D and GMed the first game my friends and I ever played in. I’ve been trying to track him down, because he was a good friend, but we lost contact when he moved. I cannot overstate how important he has been in my life.
question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game
Mike Caldwell.
We had three sessions and then I was off and running on my own. 1979. I got a boxed set of AD&D books for Christmas that year, and did not expect them at all, because we were broke as hell as a family, and I had been a whiny and grumpy person for most of the year.
In 1980, being a library sort, I picked up the local library’s event room and so had an open session every Saturday from about 10am to 6pm. I also started daily lunch hour games with the folks who are still part of my gaming group today.
After that, it counts in the hundreds, from Dave Arneson to Dean Kuntz to Roger Moore or Kim Moran, to all the “nobodies” that would sit there with me (another nobody) at a con and talk about mechanics for hours. Also, the folks at Flying Buffalo.

question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game
Urmph. I don't know if I had a mentor who taught me anything... not someone who was a DM. I mentioned before that Tim's brother John was my first DM (that I recall), and it was a lot of combat - then the awful ending because of the spat with his brother - so I didn't get much experience with other DMs before I was off doing my own.
I think my players are the ones who teach me things. And not any of them specifically - because the game is different based on the players (some want more serious, some want humor, some want a ton more RP) - and so I constantly adjust and gage and learn based off my players - and greatly improve every time, taking larger steps - but still see so many steps in front of me. I feel very confident as a DM - but I know I can keep growing. So I've never had one person I can name. Each time, my players around the table (whether real or virtual) have opened me up more as a DM. As a player, I have always just... been pretty deep into story and such. So I think the various authors were my mentors for that, because I always want to know the depths of the story.
Odd, offbeat, answer, I know. But it's true, when I think back on the question.
As I understand things, they don’t allow you to publish new worlds (though I may be wrong).
Couldn't say. But what I do know is, they take a cut bigger than other hosts, because it's the only way for you to publish Forgotten Realms content (or other licensed D&D content). Seeing as this wouldn't be that, it would be kind of foolish to publish there.
I'll preempt the "but it's the biggest audience" argument: No, and irrelevant anyway. The eyes you get on an average product there are next to nothing. If your product is going to take off, it'll take off anywhere. Or, if not ANYWHERE, at least somewhere else.
Anywho.
I don't have a mentor but I have several sources from which I've learned a lot.

The largest city - Loriduin - on Tenawae it is the capitol of the Loden (and some of the humans ). A majestic city city filled with magic ( or technologies so strange as to be magic).
Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
Excellent - so far we have:
Name of the World: Yzlaran, after the God of Lands, without whom no grains grow and no firm land beneath us. the soil is his flesh, the stone his bones!
How Many Deities: 0. The gods have died. This is especially a problem in the case of Yzlaran, what with the soil being the flesh and the stone his bones and all that.
Name of a War (Holy or Mortal) that took place and was world changing: In ages past, the world of Ylzaran was at peace, but in time it was consumed by war.
Playable Races: 1.
Largest body of water: The Octarian Ocean

An additional piece of lore: There were once eight continents (see the war section) but two were destroyed by followers of Kuanon, even though he is dead.
Welcome to Yzlaran!

That was fun.
Not too much different from my process, lol.
I laid out some basic rules to my players and then let them go, and went back every few months to collect more feedback (often at the end of a session). This is probably why my poor little world has so many weird ass things in it, is a kitchen sink style world, and isn’t as far off as I probably would half have made it left to my own devices.

I kind of want to play in this world now! It reminds me of Zweihander or the Lost Citadel.
Hah. I love that the random idea was embraced and so beautifully fleshed out.
And that everyone took everyone else's suggestions into the following choices.

We should publish a gazetteer on DM’s guild. Anyone else notice we’re almost to 100 pages? Wonder who will be the first post for the 100th page? Anyways…
question of the day: who was your mentor who taught you something about the game
"Come with me, and you'll be. in a world of pure imagination. Take a look, and you'll see, into your imagination. we'll begin, with a spin. traveling in a world of my creation. what we'll see will defy explanation!" ~Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
their is no light without dark. no calm without storm. no heroes without villains. I, unfortunately am the dark. I am the storm. I. Am. The. Villain (not really considering I'm a forever player and never get the chance to DM)
Extended Signature
Can we? Lol.

My glorious mentor was Samm Van Kirk. He taught me everything I know about D&D and GMed the first game my friends and I ever played in. I’ve been trying to track him down, because he was a good friend, but we lost contact when he moved. I cannot overstate how important he has been in my life.
