well i want to start by saying hi to all the great D&D beyond community and am new to D&D 5e i have a question about the ranger beast master sub class
my question is at level 3 when you get youre pet it get bonuses from youre PB but my question is do you sacrifice one of youre action to make the beast attack and at level 5 when you get the bonus attack feature you can make an attack and use yourre bonus attack to make youre pet attack is it how it works all feedback is appriciated 😊
english is not my first language so bear with me lol 🤣
At level 3, commanding the beast to take the Attack action uses your action.
At level 5, when you use your action to command the beast to attack, you also get one free attack as part of the same action.
At level 11, when you use your action to command the beast to attack, you still get one free attack, but now your pet can attack twice or use the multiattack action if it has that.
Note that even though you get a free attack from level 5 onward, you are not taking the attack action. Your action was to command the beast to attack, which includes one attack for you as well.

Yes, the beast master sacrifices one of it's swings when it takes the attack action in order to attack with the pet. So, in order to make this worth your time, the pet attack needs to be better than the ranger's OWN attack. When you get your extra attack at level 5, you can now attack one time with your weapon and one time with your pet, or you can attack two times with your weapon.
EDIT: An important note is that your pet's attack I am pretty sure does /not/ trigger hunter's mark, but I am not 100% positive on that.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
At level 5 you attack twice with your primary weapon (it does not matter which is your primary) and you use a bonus action to attack with the secondary weapon one time.

so since am dual weilding at level 5 when i attack do i attack with both weapons or just my main hand ?
Truth be told, you will leave your animal companion as far away from combat as possible so it won’t die to the first Fireball that it encounters. But if you do use your Action to command your Animal Companion to attack, then you cannot attack at all on your turn.

I don't think this is true. I am nearly positive that commanding the pet to attack only takes one of the beast master's swings. But yeah, generally, I wouldn't touch a beastmaster. My opinion of the archetype is pretty low in general.
EDIT: I looked it up. Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action.

sorry i wasnt clear what i meen its this example :At level 5, when you use your action to command the beast to attack, you also get one free attack as part of the same action.
so if i use my attack action to make my pet attack since am using 2 weapon at the same time do i attack with both weapon or just one with my free attack :)
As written, I think if you order your pet to attack, you do /not/ get the bonus action attack with your second weapon. The reason why is complicated (and dumb). The rule specifically states that:"
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand.
The attack action part is important. When you command your pet to attack, you are /not/ taking the attack action, you're commanding your pet. as part of commanding your pet, you can swing your main weapon one time. Since you never took the attack action, you don't qualify for the bonus action attack.

That is how I understand it. Commanding your pet to attack has a high cost. That's a big part of why I hate the beastmaster.

The reason that last but is important is that you won't get the trigger for a bonus action attack since you did not use the attack action. You also won't get any other feature that triggers off the attack action. However, something like a rogue's sneak attack, which triggers off of a weapon attack (sneak attack requires it to be a ranged weapon or a finesse weapon) could trigger off of the free attack as long as the requirements are met.
which triggers off of a weapon attack (sneak attack requires it to be a ranged weapon or a finesse weapon) could trigger off of the free attack as long as the requirements are met.
Technically it doesn’t trigger off of a “weapon attack,” it says: “The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.” Technically this can be any attack, even a spell attack that “uses a finesse or ranged weapon.” Stuff like Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade, or even Magic Stone when used with a sling.

It does not, that’s a common house rule/boon inspired by Critical Role.

Don’t use the beast to attack until later - your focus should be battlefield control and positioning first.
