I may just be using the character sheet wrong, but in my campaign we're rolling for HP each time we level up. DND Beyond seems to auto add the average HP instead, so I've been manually overriding the max HP. My problem is that each time I take a "long rest" the function seems to reset the max HP to the auto-average and I have to reset it back to my rolled HP each time. It's annoying because if I forget the HP I originally rolled there's no way I can be accurate when resetting.
Am I just doing this wrong or is this a feature that could be updated?
On the 'home' page of the character builder, set Hit Point Type to 'manual' instead of 'fixed.' Then when you go up a level, you should update your 'rolled hp' with how much you roll on your hit dice. DND Beyond will automatically add how much you gain from your CON mod ('hit point bonuses', below the text fields).
I see that this is an old thread, but I'd like to call attention to the fact that in my campaign, having my players set it to manual and then leveling up still adds the averaged fixed value, that they then have to remove, and enter their manual rolled value. Its pretty annoying.

Hi there,
I just did a couple of tests and don't see that behaviour at all.
Please can you confirm that the characters have their Hit Point Type set to manual on the character preferences (see screenshot below)?
The process of adding a level and then increasing hit points goes as follows:

Hi There,
I'm new to DnD Beyond, a new DM, and currently DMing for new players. I love this site you guys are doing and awesome job. I have been playing around with a dummy character sheet so if my players are having trouble with something I can help them. I have been running into a problem with leveling up and manual hp. I have HP set to "manual" and leveling method is XP. When I level up my character from level 1 to level 2 it manages my hp as though I am STARTING at level 2 (hit dice + (con modifier x2)). It doesn't seem to be working like the example you have here where when you level up, your hp stays the same until you manually change it. Am I doing something wrong here? Any help would be great. Thank you.
When you level up it automatically adds your Con mod, but you have to manually enter how many points you rolled in the die. Con mod gets added every level, and the system takes care of that. All you have to do is enter the number rolled.

So do I just add on top of my previous dice die roll? So if my hp roll was an 8 on level 1 and on level 2 I roll a 5, would I put 13 in rolled hp? Thank you.
I am actually seeing an issue where the CON mod is NOT being added with every level and the whole sheet seems to think you get CON mod only once. Example being Sorcerer - CON mod of +3, initial HP of 9. By third level with average fixed HP the Sorcerer HP should be 23 (4+3 = 7 to 9 so 16, but another 7 so 23) but the sheet continually puts HP a full 6 levels below what it is. That is with MANUAL selected for HP. It will read the total roll of 14 (two 4's for average, and a 6 to start) but only add that CON once.
On top of that it will automatically RESET the manual roll even if you put in say 20 for your dice to get you 23, with will force it back down to the fixed 17. So yeah manual does not work. Same with Fixed. With every long rest it will reset back down to 17. You have to put your actual HP in the Override slot which is why it is resetting the HP total, and the only reason this has to be done is because it isn't automatically adding that additional points of CON modifier.
Now there IS an HP Modifier input. If this is where you are supposed to put your CON modifier for each level (in this case a 6) then it needs to be clarified that you need to do so as it is not intuitively clear. HOWEVER even if you place the HP Modifier with your total CON modifier per leveling it will STILL reset your HP max based upon only one CON modifier and not the full set of CON modifier that you get per level on Long Rest.
The check mark to reset HP, which is useful after you have been in combat, is essentially wasted because the sheet doesn't calculate your CON modifier properly for fixed or manual rolls.

This has not been my experience with HP at all. I just tried a test character, with HP set to fixed, and the HP were correct. My test character was a 6th level sorcerer, with a +3 con modifier, and they have 44 HP. (5+4*5+3*6). If I set the character to manual HP, and enter 30 as the rolled HP, the HP correctly shows 48. I can take damage, take a long rest, and the HP resets to my max HP. I do this by tapping the “long rest” button, which slides out a panel, then tapping the “long rest” button there and then tapping it again when it says “confirm.” This step sometimes trips people up.
If none of this clarifies things for you, please post a link to your character so folks can take a look and figure out what is going wrong for you.
To confirm, when you go into edit the character sheet (ie, clicking the anvil and being in edit mode, not just changing things on the sheet while in sheet view), and you go to the class tab and click on the blue button to 'Manage HP,' you're saying that under 'Hit Point Bonuses' it says '+3 from Constitution' on your 3rd-level character? If you're seeing that, then please link your character sheet (use the URL, not the link provided by the share function) so mods can take a look. Because I tested as well, and I had the same normal results as ArwensDaughter.
To clarify for you: It does this for EVERY character I've ever made on this site. This has been an ongoing issue with pretty much every character that I have to input the health information manually since I started making characters.

Well, your Con mod is only +1, so at 1st level you should have had 7 HP, and at 2nd and 3rd levels you should have gained 5 HP each level so at 3rd level you should only have 17 HP, but it is showing 23 HP. That means you have tripled your bonus to HP from your Con modifier, and should remove 6 HP to bring it back down to 17. Was 17 what it had calculated for you? If so, the character sheet was doing it correctly.
Under “Manage Hit Points” it shows you a “+3” because it is adding together the three +1s that you actually have for all three levels combined.
Mother of crap please ignore my idiocy I was misreading my own damn con modifier. This is what I get when I'm stressed out and overworked. I had thought I put the 17 in con and not int. Thank you for pointing that out.

Yea - your Constitution modifier is +1. Your Constitution saving throw is +3 which is completely different.
