Hello! I made a homebrew magic item with the following Modifier:
Modifier Type: Bonus Modifier Subtype: Intelligence Score Fixed Value: 2 Details: Maximum of 20
This is identical to how an Ioun Stone of Intellect confers its ability score bonus. However, my magic item is giving the ability score bonus when it is equipped, even if it is not attuned. It requires attunement, but the ability score bonus is being applied the moment I equip it in my inventory. Meanwhile, the Ioun Stone of Intellect only confers its ability score bonus when it is both equipped and attuned. That is what I intended for my item; what am I doing wrong here?
I noticed something along these lines earlier this week for my Battle Smith Artificer. The Infusion: Enhanced Weapon no longer needs to be attuned to have the INT modifier used in the To Hit and Damage rolls. I thought I might have been taking crazy pills, but the feature description does not say the item has to be attuned. Part of my forum signature here even links to a comment thread about how to customize other magic weapons to work with this feature since, at the time, an item had to be attuned to for dndbeyond to apply the bonuses correctly.
I know they are working on upgrading how Magic Items function to better reflect RAW (like potentially adding actions to them). There are a couple of official magic items that are supposed to offer/have some “all the time” bonuses, and then also have some “when attuned” bonuses. This might be evidence of them trying to fix magic items so stuff like that works. 🤷♂️
I noticed it when fiddling with my homebrew artificer. First I had an entire blurb in the items about modifying the To Hit and Damage bonuses but then I decided to just make it require attunement since that applied the bonus correctly. But this week that all changed. Now I'm debating removing the attunement requirement since the only reason I added it was because of dndbeyond's mechanical limitation on replacing To Hit and Damage bonuses on magical weapons.
