So, i want to make a sword that is basically a single target fireball. knowing that i cant customize weapon damaged past the prior given options in basic weapons, i have a few things i would like to ask. when will this become a new feature because it has to happen. i also am wondering if there is either an 8d6 weapon or a 4d6 i can pretend is a crit. or maybe a way to put the fireball spell into my action sheet. if these are not possible, i would like to know if any other options are available. the reason i want this is because for some reason i thought the antimatter rifle was 6d8 just like the fireball but i found out the fireball is 8d6. this means i cant use my renamed antimatter rifle.
if someone can help me with this i would be very thankful.
You can add the fireball spell to any magic item and it will add it to their Spells tab on their character sheet as an At Will spell. You can customize any other weapon to put an attack on your Actions tab. There just needs to be text in the description about the changes made from whatever base weapon you use and he player needs to be aware that the attack roll will be on the Actions tab and the damage roll will be on the Spells tab.
I whipped something up real quick based off a net since its the only weapon with no damage. I added finesse to it so the attack roll can work off strength. I had it ignore thrown though you can't ignore range or special and you can't change it from a ranged attack to a melee attack, but then those are just listed on sheet as a reference.
The Fireball spell on the Spells tab shows the source is the name I gave the weapon. Perhaps a homebrew spell would be better to get rid of all the range, DC, and AOE notes.
Curiously though, you can't Customize the spell to add it as an attack this way to get it on the Actions tab.
On another note, have you tried making a weapon action in a feat and see if that gives you the customization you're looking for?
This comment leads me to believe that one of the bigger hurdles for using feats to adequately fill in for non-standard weapons can be overcome, ie. setting a custom action in place of a off hand weapon attack for a bonus action and having it not apply the extra modifier damage which is typical for any character that does not take the two-weapon fighting style.
Nope. I still don't know of a way to way to use an custom action to recreate a bonus action attack and it NOT apply the modifier to the damage in the same way an item with the Off-hand checked on does.
Creating a weapon is very limited in customization. Can we get better customization? Let us set damage, reach range, properties, etc. Having to pick a base weapon that only encompasses 1/5 of what we want just doesn't cut it - especially since the base weapon comes with attributes we don't want showing and cannot change.

To build on the op.

It is not possible to alter base damage or the range of a weapon, but it is entirely possible to add or remove weapon properties.

True. Note, I never said “all” weapon properties.
