Essentially, I want to bake the effects of Hex Warrior into Pact of the Blade. Adding the proficiencies is easy enough, but I can't figure out how to swap the damage modifier from STR to CHA. I know I can make a custom action in the character sheet, but was hoping to be able to have the damage modifier change on a weapon that's checked off as the Pact Weapon, like it does when you check the box for Hexblade Weapon when you have the Hexblade subclass. I tried looking at the Hexblade subclass template and I can't figure out how it does this, which makes me think it's an under-the-hood effect.
Right, i want to mimic what Hex Warrior does with a homebrew feat or item or with a homebrew subclass. Just taking 1 level in Hexblade would do what I want to do RAW, but I'm looking for a homebrew solution.
Thanks all, that did the trick, but ya, super janky. I actually added it as an automatically given option inside a different feature and it still works.
I've tryed this in a Sorcerer Subclass I'm creating and nothing came up. What could be the trouble?
After you add a “granted” class feature Named “Hex Warrior” to your subclass you must then re-save the entire subclass using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button located under Basic Information. Only that will actually apply the new class feature to the subclass for the character sheet. After that, it could take up to 20 minutes for those changes to push through to the character sheet. (Although, I have seen reports of much longer lately, some up to over night.)
When you see that the “Hex Warrior” class feature is listed under the Features & Traits section of the character sheet, you must then go to the Equipment section of the character sheet and select any One-Handed or Versatile melee weapon with which your character is proficient, hit “customize” and you will be able to check the box to make that weapon your Hex Weapon.
I'm trying to do this same thing. The difference between this and hexblade is, when I choose a weapon that qualifies for hexblade, both boxes pop up. But if I choose a two handed weapon, only pact weapon box shows up and if I click it the hex weapon box still doesn't show up. Any fixes for this?
Hi, I'm seeing this MUCH later, but I'm having trouble understanding. There is no feature to select called Hex Warrior? is this saying you have to simply name a feature "Hex Warrior" and it adds this? That would explain why they're calling it janky.
Wow, yeah very bizarre way to implement that. But thank you! I really thought "surely it can't be as simple as naming a feature Hex Warrior" and assumed I had misunderstood. Thank you so much.
Hi there, so I'm currently in the process of making a Warlock subclass that grants the "Hex Warrior" feature as one feature option from a selection of 4 options. Reading through this forum, @JimmyTheLeg mentions that he got something similar to work by making the Hex Warrior feature option "Is Given", and it should be able to give that Hex Warrior check box on a viable weapon like a shortsword-- but it doesn't for me.
I have tried both making it a selectable option along with the other 3 options without "Is Granted", no dice. I have tried making an entirely separate feature that has a "Hex Warrior" Feature Option as the ONLY option and set a prerequisite to another feature option, so that it would only become active when that other feature was selected. Still no dice.
The only way I can get the "Hex Warrior" feature to work is if it is the main feature, not imbedded in a different feature option. This is a problem for me because this allows the player to have Hex Warrior active no matter what feature choice they select, when I only want the Hex Warrior option to be available if the player selects a specific subclass feature option.
Is there anything I'm missing that might help solve my issue?
Hey there @JimmyTheLeg, thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately testing this out for myself, setting a feature named "Hex Warrior" as an Additional feature doesn't quite work it seems. It does actually provide the option in the Additional Features section of the character builder like it should, but the actual coded feature "Hex Warrior" is supposed to enable does not become active. If I try to select the generated "Hex Warrior" option in the character builder's Additional Features, it does not populate the Hex Weapon check box when you select a weapon, like it is supposed to.
It seems to only work properly if the feature is set to "Is Given", at least as far as I can tell.
Unless I can find a way around this problem, my only other option seems to make the feature available by default to all of my subclass options, and just have a text warning saying "Only select Hex Weapon if you pick X Feature!" or something along those lines.
I also thought it might work by making the Hex Warrior feature a Class Feature Option within a different feature, since the Class Features options can be given the "Is Granted" status, but that doesn't work either. It seems that the Hex Warrior feature is coded to only work if it is the main feature not connected to anything else.

Correct. What you could do is make the other choices as “replacement” features set to replace Hex Warrior if selected. Would that do?

So I wanted to test your suggestion, but I've encountered what I think is a glitch in D&D Beyond that has been manageable before, but has now escalated.
When adding the feature named "Hex Warrior" to a homebrew subclass, I as the creator of the subclass cannot see the "Hex Weapon" option appear when I try to make a character with my own subclass. When I was first testing things out, the Hex Weapon check box only appeared when Pact of the Blade was also picked, which I thought was strange but was workable. Though, when I had my brother make a character using my subclass (we are in the same campaign), he was able to see the Hex Weapon option appear at all times, even without picking Pact of the Blade. Again, very strange that when I tried to make a character I could only see this option with one configuration, especially since I'm creating the subclass.
Fast forward to today after I have deleted and remade the "Hex Warrior" Feature on my homebrew subclass, and now it is just flat out not giving e the Hex Weapon check box no matter what I try to do. I can't tell if the Hex Warrior still working and I for some strange reason just can't see the option, or if the hard coded Hex Warrior function in D&D Beyond has broken in the 2 weeks since I started working on this subclass.
Is there any way to confirm if it is an issue on my end without constantly getting my brother to check things on his account? Why s it only my account that seems to have this glitch?
(I was also going to try and submit a screenshot of what I'm seeing on my screen, but it doesn't look like D&D Beyond lets you upload images without creating an image source url first, unfortunate).

It looks for a feature called "Hex Warrior"

If you add a level 1 feature called "Hex Warrior" to your subclass, with no modifiers, the "Hex Weapon" box should appear. It is super janky.

Yup, this.^^ But if you also want the weapon and armor proficiencies you have to add them yourself with modifiers to “Hex Warrior”

If you select "Additional" instead of "Granted" you can choose in the character builder whether you have it or not.
