I suppose that the months are blurring together just as much as days of the week are for me. :(
Don’t feel bad, it’s not just you.
Holy gods this....I feel like this year has been a blur of me sitting in front of screens of all kinds with little outside world involvement.
November will be here before we know it and we will be talking about all the crazy combos we have made with the book.
Agreed. It's already September, my birthday's this month. This year has felt like both an eternity and has also gone by in the blink of an eye. Are we in the Underworld?

I was looking at the dates in the article and I’m like OMG, it’s releasing on September 15! And then I realized that was the celebration. And then I realized that Icewind Dale comes out in a week and I haven’t preordered it yet. Time is weird.

It will be like Xanathar's but covering other stuff. Instead of traps, there are puzzles. Instead of random encounter tables, there are magical environments. Instead of common magic items, there are non-common magic items. Instead of a character backstory system, there's more customization options. Instead of racial feats, there's class based feats.

the backstory system was the worst feature WOtC has ever developed for 5e.
Change my mind.

It's no heroic chronicle, but at least it's something. Before it came out, there was no official system for backstory building. I still use it, combining it with the Heroic Chronicle to get a super in depth backstory.

This Is Your Life is probably the section of Xanathar's that I've used the most, both for making pc backgrounds and NPC ones. It's not for everyone, but calling it the "worst feature developed" for this edition seems a tad hyperbolic. I mean, True Strike exists....

Here, I present into evidence: Sposta’s exhibit A-
the subclasses do not hold a candle to the random name generation, this one table has helped me out so very much, also i am not confident in saying the spells in general but defenetly catapult, conjure greater demon, infernal calling, mighty fortress and create homunculus are all fantastic spells i'd like to try out on a wizard sometime. Oh yeah and the downtime rules and new tool rules were truly inspiring and interesting and also things i really love. Really subclasses were the least interesting thing along with traps

Huh. Personally I always felt lazy using it. Also all the backstories felt so generic......But again, each to their own.

If you feel like using it gives you more generic backstories, you're using it wrong. It's not supposed to replace your creative character backstory, it's supposed to support it. I go above and beyond what rolling in it gives me, adding so much more to it than I could come up just on my own.

A lot of times I don't even pick my background until I have played my character a few sessions. I let the way my character plays in their environment and with other people inform the kind of experiences that led to the character becoming the way they are. It's a bit retcon-ish, but I feel like the end result is a richer character and roleplaying experience at the table.
That's my favorite section, too. It starts with the best advice regarding D&D in my opinion. "Ideas. Not rules."

No?” will be my epitaph.

IDK about that one either......I usually come up with pages upon pages of backstory on a whim, then have to tone it down. It is definitely possible I am using it wrong, but I dont need the table to come up with "You lover died tragically." or "You encountered something supernatural" or "Screw you DM, your player found an extra 20gp".

As a general rule, I don't write a number of paragraphs to my character's backstory that exceeds their proficiency bonus. I have written too many backstories before I play a character that I have looked back on a few months later and thought, "wow, this is not my character at all."
But that's just my own experience and should not be taken as a judgment on what works for you.

I heard that there was no Psionics in that book, just a bunch of Spellcasting I’m not interested in. 😉

I feel like Tasha's will be XGtE with less subclasses and more variant rules.
Haven't you heard? there are gonna be rules for puzzles to- No one cares Jim.

For me it was subclasses.
