I am thinking of playing a human fighter. he is a rune knight, but when he levels up, he sometimes takes a level in sorcerer. basically, he has a power in his soul, but he is kind of afraid to use it due to an incident in his childhood, involving a fireball. any feedback on the roleplaying elements? (btw I'm new here please don't hate post)
That is a really interesting beginning to the character. Rune Knight is a fun class and the flavor of the runes not having the power but the power coming from the individual using the runes is nice flavor. Depending on the nature of the game you are going to use this character in you may not need to come up with anything else for a character, that would be a discussion to have with your DM.
What type of sorcerer were you thinking about taking levels in?
RP wise, it seems very open. It feels like a character that will start out gentle giant like and become more confident as they learn to use their power and deal with their trauma. However, it really dosn't feel that limiting. If you are having trouble comming up with stuff for the character, asking yourself questions about them is a good way to fins answers. Who is this person, what caused them to be that way, why have they reacted the way they did, when did that happen, how have they reacted, so on and so forth.
I think this could be fun and flavorful without any levels in sorcerer. Rune Knight gets a lot of magic-like effects with their runes and random hulking out. You can describe those things as the latent power in your soul and achieve the same roleplay effect without hurting your performance.
I say this because Fighter/Sorcerer is a pretty awkward combo that would be tough to play effectively. You'd be pretty likely to feel left behind as other classes got extra attacks and high level spells and you didn't get either until several levels later.
What I'm trying to say is, don't feel constrained by the built-in flavor that classes have. You don't have to have levels in sorcerer to play a character with latent magical ability. You don't have to take levels in warlock to make a deal with a powerful patron. You don't have to take levels in barbarian to have anger issues. You can forge your own story limited only by your ability to describe your features and abilities.
