Premise: Players will be survivors of a shipwreck that wash up on the shore of a land under a strange curse... those that arrive on the island wake without memory of who and what they are, or any part of their past. They retain skills they honed in life so far, but don't recall what that might be. Every day is a struggle, in a harsh, hostile environment, while characters attempt to rebuild their memories and get a grasp of what they can do and how they can work together to help the group survive.
Logistics: I will use the DnDBeyond Random Character to roll a level 3 character for each player. To start, you will not have any information on what you character is or can do, and can only learn this to be able to fill out your character sheet through playing. You describe what you want to do, make the d20 roll, and I'll convey how well you do in a way that will allow you to puzzle out modifiers, proficiencies, etc.
4-5 Players: You should have fun if you like puzzles, don't mind mystery and uncertainty, willing to play outside your usual character archetype, and don't mind a sub-optimal build.
If you are a min-max optimizer that only ever plays one race and once class, probably not for you, unless you need someone to force you outside that bubble!
I'll take the first 4-5, unless more show interest before I'm able to take this out of recruiting, in which case, there will be a roll off for spots.
Currently playing in: Quest for the Shunned City, Coliseum of Conquest, DragonDenn's Dragonlords, Shipwrecked on Fugue, Tomb of Annihilation, Razor's Lost Mine of Phandelver, The Lost Kenku & One Grung Above
Currently DMing: Princes of the Apocalypse, Out of the Abyss, Coliseum of Conquest—The Arena (Sometimes)
I working through trying to learn all the different classes, so this would definitely push me outside of my bubble. I like puzzles very much. Just so long as it is a female character (I don't think I could put on a male persona...haha)
Glad folks think it sounds interesting! I ran something similar for a one shot (in person) previously, and it was well received.
Glad you asked about spellcasting, yes it would require a bit more discovery, but the mechanic I used in the one shot, that I forgot to mention in the initial post here, was that I gave each player a token that they could attempt to redeem if they felt stuck, and if their character COULD do something in that instance, I'd describe how they have a moment of clarity and are able to reconnect to be able to do whatever it was. The token was then in my possession, and I could 'spend' it to reveal something more about their abilities.
I think since this intended to be a bit longer, that I might do that differently... I'm considering something along the lines of you having a die that you can roll a limited number of times and frequency (once per long rest?), and if you roll high, you get the most useful piece of information, and if you roll low, you get some other piece of information.

This sounds very unique and interesting. Count me in.
How would spellcasting work? It seems like there wouldn't be a way to discover if you could cast spells or not.
I would guess that inventory shouldn't be difficult to figure out, so you should have components or a focus if you're a caster....at least that was my thought, and I could be completely off base with how it gets run

Yup! I think I'll close it there, I can't seem to remove the recruiting tag from my phone though.
I was planning on rolling traits/etc, in case there was anything interesting, but you'll be able to 'redefine' yourselves.
I'll leave any gender (or non-gender) in your hands, as well as physical description beyond what is suggested by race and ability scores (to a lesser degree).
I'll move us out of recruiting when I'm at a computer, get character's rolled, and make a first post.

Snippets of memory come to you, frantic and harsh.
The crack of thunder piercing the howling wind and creaking of timber.
Shouts from sailors, the spray of salt water in your mouth.
Dark night, wind tossed waves lit only by the occasional streak of lightning.
The screams, suddenly cut off as the ship shatters and sinks, your own shouts cut off by water smashing into your face, into your mouth and nose as you're dunked under.
Struggling, trying to swim, trying to stay afloat...
...
darkness
...
nothingness
...
And now, quiet lapping of waves, the sun warming the parts of you resting on solid, sandy ground.

Will character traits and flaws be randomised, too? Or ar we developing those as we go?
