What class and background would be best for a character who throws things? I'm playing a Grung who has no concept of what weapons look like, so he just throws but I don't know what would be a good class or background. I wanna go with more of a STR build.
Any martial class can throw weapons well, but if your character "has no notion of what weapons look like" you should probably not pick Fighter, since that's the designated weapon expert class. A lot of a Monk's abilities are tied to unarmed strikes so I wouldn't go with that either. Barbarian, Rogue and Ranger are all perfectly viable though. (So is Paladin, but that comes with a lot of narrative baggage that probably doesn't apply here.)
STR build means Fighter, Ranger, Paladin or Barbarian. To buff your Throwing your choices are basically Rage (2024 rules), and/or the Thrown Weapon Fighting Style (I think is in 2024 and 2014). If you are playing a Grung, I don't know if you want to be wearing heavy armour? If you don't want to be wearing armour then Barbarian is your only choice. 2024 Fighter is heavily based on Weapon Mastery which doesn't really feel like it fits your character. Both Paladin and Ranger use a lot of spellcasting which I dunno if that's how you see your character or not.
I’m going to say kind of the opposite, or contrarian, point of view and say absolutely go fighter. The only issue would be the armor, if you didn’t want to wear armor. And I would say go battle master.
I know it sounds like the opposite of what you are going for but you said the Grung doesn’t know what weapons look like but just throws. Not that they are not good or effective with what they throw.
And the maneuvers are just mechanics that you can play as just what happens when they throw, not necessarily an expert tactical weapon use. (You the player are making the decision to use a maneuver tactically, not the character) So you can disarm because you throw and it happened to knock the weapon out of the target’s hand, etc. and the wording on some attack maneuvers are “when you hit with an attack roll” so it woks with weapons that have the thrown property or improvised weapons like throwing a rock.

Taking Tavern Brawler would be a must for this concept. Focus on finding pointy things to take advantage of your skin poison.
I would recommend Ranger to give you Thrown Weapon Fighting Style and Hunter's Mark.
Being a wilderness outdoorsy type would go along with lack of ties to civilization.
On the downside, you would not be able to take advantage of weapon masteries since you don't want to use actual weapons.

I agree on fighter. And maybe it’s obvious, but thrown weapon style is a must. And you could always let the character evolve as you play it. You start off throwing rocks and tree branches, but after you’re out in the world for a bit you start to realize how hand axes and light hammers would be wayyy better. It’s an opportunity for character growth, and then lets you take advantage of weapon masteries. Not to mention when you start running into monsters with resistance to non-magical damage; a magic hand axe or dagger is easy enough to find, but you won’t find a +1 rock anywhere.

Javelins, darts, and daggers would be better regarding species.

What about Giant Foundling for a background? It's from Bigby Presents - Glory of Giants and will give Strike of the Giants feat to add extra punch to your melee and thrown ranged attacks. If you have martial weapon proficiency, you can pick up the feat later.
As others have mentioned, Tavern Brawler would also be good since it gives you proficiency with Improvised Weapons. While this is intended to let you hit with table legs and what not, it also allows you to throw anything with proficiency. Including, technically, a great sword or other heavy weapon.
Are you looking to toss anything for 1d4 damage (Tavern Brawler) or make thrown weapons you are proficient in hit harder (Strike of the Giants)? What sounds more fun?
If you are not planning on relying on traditional weapons, what about Path of the Beast (Tasha's I think for natural weapons) or Path of the Giant (Bigby's again for giant sizing when raging, 6th level gives thrown property to a weapon - and it returns to your hand!) Barbarian? World Tree also looks good in the 2024 PHB.
Keep in mind characters grow throughout a campaign. A creature who doesn't know what weapons are only works for 1-2 encounters. Adventurers have weapons shoved in their faces repeatedly and anything with more than a 4-5 INT is going to realize they can also pick up pointy stick and throw it.
