The post-Tasha's explanation is that the character creation ASI are there to underline that all adventurers are inherently outstanding and you can move them to better realize your specific character.
I get that, but I disagree with it wholly. The extra 15 points of point buy (above the 12 that a Commoner must get) are there to underline that all adventurers are inherently outstanding. The Racial ASIs were there to represent genetics, the fact that those racial ASIs could be replicated through leveling up was meant to represent that hard work and focus can overcome genetic predisposition. If anything, Powerful Build is more indicative of the concept of inherent racism than a +2 Str ever was.
I don't understand this. But it's okay. I don't need to. Your opinion is your own, and mine is mine.
A trait like Powerful Build is something that can never be achieved through hard work, discipline, or determination. It is saying that races with Powerful Build are inherently meant to be sentient beasts of burden. Whereas a bonus to Strength allows those PC to still be inherently stronger than others, but doesn’t preclude others from achieving the same level of Strength, nor does it make certain characters genetically predisposed to being the party pack-mule ready to carry everyone else’s stuff like a servant. If powerful build also allied to stuff like grappling and jump distances then at least it wouldn’t scream “porter/bellhop” nearly so much
Seriously, how am I the only one that sees a racial trait that makes one race genetically predisposed to performing manual, back-breaking labor for others as more racially insensitive than a simple boost to Strength that could be achieved by anyone at 4th-level. I’m flabbergasted. Being naturally stronger is not “racist,” being a genetically predisposed carrier of other people’s stuff on the other hand…. Really?!? Nobody else sees that?!? It’s just me?!? Really?!? C’mon… really?!?
I loved Dark Sun. And Ravenloft was too emo, Tasha’s was a travesty to Psionics, and if they retcon the cannibalism out of Dark Sun then they might as well not bother doing it at all. It’s supposed to be cannibalistic. Either let it be what it is supposed to be, or leave it dead, but don’t disgrace it with retcons, shitty Psionics, and staplegun rejects.
Thats my worry too...it will be "cleaned up" for 5e and lose the grim dark that made it different.
Slavery, cannibalism, and genocide are huge parts of the lore. While this could be an interesting setting for those who want such an experience it would be hard sell for the majority of the player base me thinks.
Genocide and death and that is also a hard sell. It's a niche setting, but the Thri Keen indicate...
Thri Keen could easily be placed into Spell jammer or any desert setting.
Also they have been around as a creature since the monster manual.

Yes, but Dark Sun was the first to introduce those, along with Aaracokra, Genasi, and Eladrin as playable races.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Planescape-themed UA.
If WotC is going Spelljammer; maybe they’ll give Planescape some love.
Perhaps even update the plane-touched races…make it more like the Gothic Lineages.
That way you have dwarves who have a celestial bloodline…halfling a with a tiefling heritage…some Genasi re-works…
No. I doubt it. They're too similar. It would be like releasing Faerun and Greyhawk in the same year. Bet on Dark Sun instead. You'll get more money probably.
Dark Sun seems a bit nihilistic, psionic, and uh...cannibally for 5e.
And the Mulls, don't forget how they were created. How is that going to fly in 5e.

Dark Sun and other older settings aren't my jam. Sure, I love deserts and psionics, but can we just have an archipelago setting with ice mountains and waka and puffins already?
I’d rather play on Athas. The only official settings I ever really enjoyed were Mystara and Dark Sun. I’m almost as old as some of those settings.

But we saw Thri Keen. And if you talk nihilistic, I'll say Ravenloft. If you talk psionic, I'll say Tasha's. If you say cannibals, I say they're retcon. I dislike Dark Sun, but I feel like it's coming to spite me.
Thri-Kreen have been in 5e since the Monster Manual was published, and no mention was made of Arras in the entry so you can have Thri-Kreen without Dark Sun. I don't really have a stake in whether Dark Sun shows in 5e or no, but the Thri-Kreen have so far been setting agnostic in 5e. Making them a playable race doesn't necessarily bind them to a setting.
Also Thri-Kreen fill out the Star Frontiers analogs a few have picked up on, filling in for Vrusk.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
I wanna see the return of Planescape now that Spelljammer stuff is on the horizon. I've always thought that was a neat setting because it (and Spelljammer) can exist simultaneously with all the other dnd worlds and isn't isolated to a single one. Did your party set fire to the forgotten realms? Then find yourself a portal, escape, and start over through Sigil, city of doors. Now they can set fire to Ebberon, Wildemount, Theros, Ravnica, and countless others worlds too! So come, take the great wheel for a spin and see which poor unsuspecting dnd world gets to bear the burden of your bloodthirsty campaign derailers next! I mean, what could go wrong right? *party ignites an interdimensional war*
I maintain we're getting a hybrid Planejammer/Spellscape thing. There's too much similarity and the base concepts of each are too easy to mash together and get something even more interesting out of it not to.
Personally I wouldnt mind seeing a Feat UA. With Strixhaven we now have a feat which has both a level prerequisite and the prerequisite of having taken a different feat prior.
If this became more common place, I wonder if we could see feats that "build off" of base feats present in existing materials. Or perhaps more powerful/potent feats that have specific level prerequisites to prevent them from being taken in Tier 1 or Tier 2 or play.

That would be pretty dope, a more advanced form of magic initiate would be interesting, it could maybe even allow for you to build a.. 1/4th? caster and still retain the benefits of some of the less magical martial class features.

Well we already had the first steps to this with the Moderately Armored and Heavily Armored feats. You needed proficiency with light armour to have acces to the moderately armored and so on. It just took WoTC ages to take the next step.

they tried this before with Dragonmarks before abandoning the concept, so we will have to see about that

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
As far as new subclasses could be concerned, I feel like the Artificer is overdue for a new option. It just got the Armorer added in Tasha's but since it only has 4 subclasses it has a little catching up to do. Van Richtens gave a new Bard & Warlock option and Fizbans gave a new Monk & Ranger option, so I imagine any of the other classes could see something new too.
After getting both Twilight and Peace domains, I doubt the cleric needs something new.
Both Wizards and Paladins got subclasses in Tasha's that were reprinted/updated from other materials (SCAG and Theros, respectively) in place of a new subclass, so they could probably use some love.
There are a ton of subclass options available now, so we dont necessarily NEED anything new. But, if a UA were to come out introducing new subclass options, I will be hoping for something for Artificers, Paladins, and Wizards.

WotC hasn't even officially published the last Eberon book so I wouldn't get your hopes up, and even Warforged are not amongst the updated races in Mordenkaines book of Controversies.
I would like to see more Fighter Subclasses. The only subclasses that I like are Battlemaster and Cavalier, so having some more options would be nice. Otherwise, Artificers and Paladins are on my list of classes that need some love.
What do you mean they haven't published the last Eberron book? Was there something that came out after Rising from the Last War? If you're referring to Exploring Eberron, that was published by Keith Baker without input from WotC and is not considered canon.
As for Warforged, I've heard some people suggest that they might be in the updated PHB, which does kind of make sense. Even if you've never engaged with the Eberron setting in any way, you know what a Warforged is.
