Curious minds inquiring. What's stopping you from just using the shield as an improv weapon? Seems to me that using a shield as an improv weapon deals decent damage, and you can take Crusher feat with it. Using shield mastery you can cause someone to go prone, and then that'll give you advantage, increasing the chance of a crit, which deals more damage from Crusher. The two work great together.
EDIT - sorry, was thinking the Piercer feat for the more damage bit. Crusher crits just knock prone. Still, using Crusher and Shield Master, plus the shield FS, gives you a very strong "battlefield controller" thing going on. Not great damage, but decent, and you could combine that with paladin smites to make up for the lack of damage
Shield Training: Good for characters that don't get shields or have to juggle their spell components, but where is the feat that lets me turn a shield into the weapon we all know it is?
When basically my entire table demanded that shield punches be a thing, I just added the following bullet to the end of the PHB Shield Master feat:
"When you attack, you may use your shield to do so in lieu of other weapons you may possess. Shields deal 1d4 bludgeoning damage and use your Strength modifier for their attack and damage rolls, but are not considered melee weapons for the purposes of other features or abilities."
That has proven to be enough for my players. What I've seen is mostly that simply having the option of punching with the shield, even if it isn't a fantastic option, is all folks really want. With these new damage type feats in particular, being able to Slash with one hand and Crush with the other could be worthwhile for someone looking to make an option-laden martial character.
Frankly, all these new options are very much making me wonder if I shouldn't do that Martial Overhaul after all. We're certainly getting more tools for it.

Do you already have a homebrew thread for this? If not, I think you should start one. I would love to follow along and give unsolicited feedback as this develops.
I don't. This is more of a series of semi-connected ideas I've had over the last year or so to address the fact that martial combat in D&D is very staid and often boring - "I hit it with my sword however many times my level allows me to." Heh, sadly, most of the sorts of homebrew I like to do is of the tinkering-with-systems sort, and that never lands in the Homebrew forums. Only time I tend to get feedback is when I make a concrete thing people can Add To Collection, and even then I have to prod pretty hard for it.
It may take a little longer then normal due to some of the feats add new features that were not in feats before. DDB team is in an exploration place with these said feats and they don't want to fumble on there not getting lost roll, hopefully someone has guidance they can cast or they have someone using a help action to give them advantage on the roll.

Well, what times were they put on the site in the past few months?

Your martial training has helped you develop a particular style of fighting. As a result, you learn one Fighting Style option of your choice from the fighter class. If you already have a style, the one you choose must be different. Whenever you gain a level, you can replace this feat’s fighting style with another one from the fighter class that you don’t have.
That would also include the Fighting Styles from the back of the CFVs UA, as well as the the Superior Technique fighting style from the actual Fighter entry of that doc. Anybody have any ideas about that? Some things are scratching around in my brain about that, but I haven’t quite figured them out yet.
A monk taking the Unarmed Fighting style is currently the only thing that comes to mind.
They'd have to be a Kensei, or have proficiency with a Martial Weapon from another source (race, feat, etc), as Monks don't have any Martial proficiencies by default.

Monks have Shortsword as a default Monk Weapon. It’s the only martial weapon the get, but they get it. Also, the CFVs UA has an enhancement to Martial Arts:
Monk Weapons
1st-level monk feature (enhances Martial Arts) You can use this feature to define your monk weapons, rather than using the definition in Martial Arts. You practice your martial arts with specially chosen weapons, which become monk weapons for you. You can choose a number of weapons to be your monk weapons equal to 5 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum of five weapons). The chosen weapons must each meet the following criteria: • The weapon must be a simple or martial weapon. • You must be proficient with the weapon. • The weapon must lack these properties: heavy, special, or two-handed.

Good catch. I always forget that the Shortsword is a Martial weapon in this system.

Wasn't there something in Class Feature Variants that allowed you to determine what weapons your monk could be proficient in?

I created a variant human wizard with the artificer initiate feat, it seems real nice having a Wizard with the spell Cure Wounds without doing a multi-class with some other class with a different casting stat.

Edit: I personally find it amusing that I wrote that feat a while ago, and now we have 4 UA feats that all work with it incredibly well.

Yes, if Sigred had quoted my response instead of YGiraffe’s you would see it.I apologize, that came out wrong. I’m sure that read as way more dickish than I had intended.
