So, I think that it's safe to say that no one saw what releases are coming out this year to be coming. Certainly, there was speculation about books with Critical Role tie-ins after Descent Into Avernus and Acquisitions Incorporated, but I don't think anyone expected a full campaign setting book on the scale that was Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. Then, we were "surprised" again by Mythic Odysseys of Theros. By "surprised" I don't mean it wasn't a surprise, I mean, I don't think anyone expected them to put out 3 campaign settings in a row, but it wasn't an exact surprise that it was a Magic: the Gathering setting.
So, now there's talk of Xanathar's 2.0. I think that it will be a planescape campaign setting book, or at least narrated by a planescape related character. This is based on the fact that many of the recent Unearthed Arcana subclasses are planescape themed, and the summoning spells are all planescape themed.
So, if the year includes Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, Mythic Odysseys of Theros, and Xanathar's 2.0/Planescape Campaign Setting book, that leaves likely at least one more book release this year, possibly another if we're lucky.
So, what's your theories on what it will be? I am betting another campaign setting, just so we get a whole year of them after years of people complaining about Forgotten Realms being the only option. What campaign setting it would be, I don't have a clue. Dragonlance and Greyhawk are too generic and similar to FR, we already have Eberron, and Dark Sun isn't likely until we have better psionic rules. My best guess would be desert themed world, but that falls into either Dark Sun or Amonkhet, and I don't think we're likely to get either of them.
What's your guesses? I'd love to hear them. Also, what do you think about the Planescape/Xanathar's 2.0 theory?

With as hard as they’ve been pushing Psionics, I would be surprised if we don’t see something related to Dark Sun either later this year or next. We have, basically, a template for gemstone dragons released in the form of the Sapphire Dragon supplement, and it’s looking like there’s experimentation for a Player’s Handbook or Xanathar’s 2.0 (especially with the expanded class options and the array of reset mechanics that go in nearly every new subclass).
I also predict there being a follow-up book set in Exandria, given how successful the Wildemount book was. Just not for a couple years, at the earliest. Maybe they can buy the rights for the initial printing of the Tal’Dorei Guide, revise it for a WotC official version with more character options; but I doubt it, at least not until they release another of the settings people have been chomping at the bit for the last few years.
In seriousness, I would love if they expanded Ravenloft and put out a proper sourcebook in addition to Curse of Strahd. I could also see them putting out a Spelljammer book, seeing as they have references to it in Dungeon of the Mad Mage and in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.
Spelljammer is awesome, but they need to do some serious changes with the current form of campaign settings. (Ravnica, Eberron, Theros, Wildemount, all of them don't have crystal spheres.)

We can all have wants, but it does take time to write books, and I am certain they have a set order that they won't deviate too much from.
So my guess would be two adventure books after Theros to end the year. 1st drops Aug-Oct, 2nd drops Nov-Dec. Akin to Dragon Queen, or the Waterdeep ones.
I don't see a new corebook until mid 2021 at the earliest, unless it is of the paper thin variety of SCAG, or they pull all the races/classes/subclasses from the various settings, and put them into one big adventure's league happy book. Not enough unique content in the current UA's for a Xanathar's 2 electic boogaloo on it's own.
I don't see any "classic" settings either, because easier to keep everything tidy in house, and no external royalties. The powers that be have made no show of interest in old settings, and dodge the questions about them nicely. You can even see them phasing out old settings, as mentions of old content seem to be slimming down to next to nothing.
What I can see is more and more Magic the Gathering settings, that will be one offs, and ignored by wizards after the new card sets come out, with a corresponding book to go with it.
Pretty certain that is why I am so salty about the Theros book, and not about the Critical Role book. One exists as a work of love, and will certainly be taken care of for years to come, while the other is a glorified advertisement. Ravnica was a good book, Theros will probably be good as well, but they are ones and done.
I could see an adventure taking place in Neverwinter happening. That would complete the Big 3 cities of the Sword Coast (Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter). This could also be seen as a "campaign setting" as it would definitely have a Neverwinter Gazetteer.
I have no idea what the adventure would be about, though.

If they did an adventure set in Neverwinter, I'd have preferred it as a tie into the waterdeep books, maybe an alternative in place of the mad mage. They left enough hooks in heist to warrant it if a DM was so inclined. While I am always game for playing in and around Neverwinter, I don't see them doing a setting book about the area, because it already exists as the "glorious" SCAG. But between many years running a persistent server for bioware's neverwinter nights, or even my first taste of D&D in an old DOS game my dad showed me how to play when I got the hand me down computer, that area does hold a good place in my feels.
I would love 2 adventure books, one 1-5 levels of adventure, and another 5-20 or something like that, so it can be a sequel to the first Neverwinter adventure, or to Dragon Heist.

If I were designing it, and had to at least use Neverwinter. i'd go 1-7. Start it in Yartar at the hiring fair they have, and do 2 levels of rep building quests. another level for guarding a caravan to neverwinter proper. then have 4-7 be dealing with messes in the city, with the end fight being something to do with Luskan. Then 2nd book have it start in neverwinter with some court intrigue, to get you to 10'ish. Then have a grand adventure out to Ascore, and have the big baddy be the Netheril. Lots of intersting and dangerous places along the path regardless of the way you go. Although admittedly, that has probably been done 1000 times, and certainly sprinkled from bits of old games I have played.
That would be cool. We need some solid 5e Netheril information. It's a cool story and nation. My current main character is a changeling hexblade warlock whose patron is Karsus, and is trying to resurrect the Netherese Empire in a town near Ascore called New Ascore.
So, I second the Netheril idea.
A Luskan game would be awesome as well.
I also second Gothic Earth.

I think it's good to leave some vague places in a world like FR so you can tailor them to your campaign needs. I'd much rather see something with a unique atmosphere like Dark Sun.
So I already have Mordenkainen Tome of Foes which has Orcus and Demogorgon in it.
But I want an entire book dedicated to the Abyss and Nine Hells.
Where is that?
Descent into avenue is probably the closest you'll get. I think there was a fiend folio supplement as well at some point.

Yeah, we need another book like GoS and Tales from the Yawning Portal. A book that has a bunch of adventures in it. Either Desert themed adventures, or Horror.

Spelljammer is awesome, but they need to do some serious changes with the current form of campaign settings. (Ravnica, Eberron, Theros, Wildemount, all of them don't have crystal spheres.)
When Spelljammer was released in 2nd edition all of the game worlds had crystal spheres including Dark Sun but it was so far off the beaten path that you couldn't travel to it. The exception to the crystal sphere was Ravenloft being only a demiplane, Planescape being a gateway to other worlds and the Planer nature of it they may of not had a crystal sphere I didn't play it so not sure. So if they do a spelljammer they will then say which worlds do and don't have said spheres.
Yes, if they were to revamp spelljammer, they'd need to make some serious changes. A lot of spelljammer is too weird to be included in modern D&D, and other bits aren't good enough to be included. Some of it is gold. Giff, Neogi, Nautiloids, Beholders, all of those are great, but Dolwar, the flying pigs, infinity vines, and a lot of spelljammer should be left out or changed.

I'd like to see Dark Sun and Dragonlance, especially as Krynn has so many time periods the book could cover.
Personally, I feel FR has gotten too huge for it's own good. We need to take a break from it.
