I've seen a lot of threads where people are looking to change a homebrew item after they've published it. That is currently not allowed. I suggest creating a "Submit to Playtest option that submits it to the public, but can still be edited by the original owner. Having a new item tested by just your own campaign can't possibly go through all the iterations needed to refine it. Having something that's public but editable will allow it to reach a wider audience, who can add comments on how the item plays out in their group.
That's where creating a new version would apply. Just increment up your version number.
That leaves ghosts of the old version that can haunt your future homebrew endeavors forever. It is a terrible way to do it if it can at all be avoided.

I agree 100% and have previously suggested it as well.
I want a feature for homebrew that one could use prior to publication. One would select “playtest” and it would do a soft publication subject to change that could be edited. And then, when all the playtesting is over (requiring a minimum of 90 days and an edits log) it could be published “certified playtested” and if people publishe without going through that process then it would get published “unplaytested.”
Then there could be a toggle for it in the search function for the homebrew section so a user could choose to only search through things that have been specifically playtested and edited.
I like this idea too. It would definitely lead to more proactive engagement within the DNDBeyond Community. And ideally would reduce a lot of redundant "bloating" I see in the public home-brew section. So double win on top of the benefits mentioned so far.
Devil's advocate though, I guess the system as is prevents a content owner from sort of Rick Roll trolling their audience. Say someone starts some sort of compelling content that hooks a whole swath of the community to adopt in development stage. Then through an edit either intentionally breaks it or modifies the fluff to be offensive ... yeah, seems a bizarre use of productivity but I don't fully understand trolling as pastime other than it is a thing people do. So while I see the benefits of making it easier to community workshop new home-brew content, a risk consideration did pop up in my thinking that calls the benefit into debate. I suppose a "reputation" system could help alleviate that but that means implementing another system for the membership.
Another thought: make it easier to render "raw" home-brew into the forum, then interested DMs and players can take it and use the forum as a workshop space before the ready for prime time playtested version goes live. Additionally maybe allow a "playtest credit" sort of community endorsement feature in the home-brew so home-brew consumers can see which ones have been vetted and which ones are just being spun into the wild relatively untested.

You have been liked, IamSposta. I haven't scrolled that thread much does the DesignTeam ever give direct feed back? This would also be a good thing to float during one of their Thursday Devtalks when questions are answered. If enough of us login and ask the same question, it's more likely for the mod to float it to the host.

The mods generally keep an eye on everything. I don’t Twitch so I don’t see the Devtalks until YouTube.
