Just bought all the sourcebooks and wanted to dive into making characters, but for some reason I can't figure out how to make a custom lineage with Tasha's? I know I own it (bought the sourcebook bundle), but it doesn't show up in the race selection menu. Any help is very appreciated! :)
Same. I have Tasha in my purchases here, I selected the "customize your origin" slider in the initial character generator/creator ("chargen") app page ... and no ability to then create a custom lineage.
I wonder if it's not intended to be part of chargen, but instead is a way to create homebrew races (and then that homebrew race shows up in the chargen app). I haven't looked into creating homebrew content here though. But that's the only reason I can think of about why it wouldn't be in the chargen app yet. That or they're still working on the code for it.
The origin manager, which allows you to changes elements of pre-made races, is part of the character builder. However, as it stands the custom lineage rules are not integrated into the character builder. Instead, you can use the homebrew tools to create a custom lineage, then use that within the character builder. Just be sure to enable homebrew content.

Yeah, just to be clear, I can do the race/lineage customization for existing lineage. It's the creating an entirely new lineage as per the purple box in the upper left corner of page 8 (of Tasha) that is missing. It sort of makes sense that you have to do it via homebrew, though. But it would be nice if it was as easy/direct as a variant-human.

As I said in the private message thread:
thanks for the effort, but if you can't do the explanation "in band" (in text/pictures within the forum thread) then I'm not really interested. Nor do I know you well enough to trust random links to outside places (not even known sites like youtube).
honestly i'm not super happy with this "workaround" why not make this as intuitive and clear as variant humans are? it seems that the devs have no plans to do so because "it's already possible with custom races", and honestly, i'm not sure that they get it, that's not why we use dndbeyond...

Actually, they’ve said it’s on their list. But the custom lineage sidebar is something they only saw 2 weeks before release. There was no way to get all the mechanic implemented by release date, and since this one they didn’t learn about until late and they knew could be homebrewed, they didn’t attempt to have it done for release.
Because Variant Human is a specific racial variant. The Custom Lineage is not, so DDB isn’t allowed to create one. The best you can hope for is that it will be implemented like the custom background was.
Hi everyone, because of the feedback we've received from the community we're looking into the best options to implement the Custom Lineage. For the moment you can use the homebrew tools, but as soon as we have something in place we'll make an announcement.
It seems like Custom Lineage and Variant Human are the same thing, mechanically.
The only differences are:
• +2 to one ability score • +1 to two ability scores
• one skill • Darkvision
It seems the same computer code can be used for both.
Indeed, the variant human is itself a custom lineage.
If the codes are that similar....
We don't know the backend of DDB so to claim anything is "the same" is really stretchy our knowledge of what is under the hood. If it were this easy, Stormknight wouldn't be going around constantly say "We hear you we ARE working on a solution but other things come first and there is a way to do this already." Because as you say they are the same code so just copy and paste.
I imagine it is a little more complicated than that since you can use the Custom Lineage to essentially create a variant of any pre-existing race, and that would certainly make things complicated if you want to be able to have that race selection predetermine which feat you qualify for when you go to select an option for that feature. It would be less convenient to simply list everything and deal with turning a blind eye to the options that populate which you don't qualify for and as a DM I'm sure it would be a little frustrating to have to deal with the extra proofreading to make sure a character is legal since DDB is in part pitched as a character generator which a DM can see at a glance which options are switched on or off and know with a fair amount of security that a pc made on it was made using the same content they deem legal for their game. The homebrew tools don't have an option that will allow you to create a feature for a generic "homebrew-race" made Custom Lineage to have a drop-down selection to assign a race to your character, and it is really hard to create a feature where one of the options itself a choice from a long list of options and the other is a specific totally unrelated mechanic (skill vs darkvision). I couldn't figure out how to get it to display properly when I created a Custom Lineage "race"; it won't populate it. I did end up having to choose whether I wanted DDB to hide racial feats anyway, or hitting the switch to show everything despite creating it as a race variant, not a stand-alone race. I imagine it would be pretty frustrating as a DM to have to create a homebrew Custom Lineage as a variant for every pre-existing race in order to make the pre-existing material populate where it needs to. Especially since DDB doesn't allow you to dictate which Racial traits you are replacing, it just assumes your race variant replaces the traits that pre-existing variants do, so you end up with weird artifacts from their descriptions.

Custom Lineage is seperate from customizing an existing race.
Customizing an existing race only allows you to swap ASIs, languages, and proficiencies.
Custom Lineage is its own separate "race(s)". You not only determine the ASIs, languages, and proficiencies, but you also determine the size, feat, and trait. You cannot combine customizing an existing race with Custom Lineage unless you are homebrewing.

Thank you! I have it up and running now, I appreciate it. Hopefully it gets added natively for everyone soon, but at least there's this workaround

Do you have to have purchased Tasha's for this to be an option?
Yes. I believe you have to purchase the whole book to get the Custom Lineage option.

could you send it to me too? I really wanna use this race.
The Custom Lineage race seems to miss the ability score choice option in the app, am I missing something?
EDIT: It is actually there, but not on the Race page, but later on the Ability page ;)
