Currently though you can't create Classes just sub-classes though this is something that I think is planned as part of the homebrew revamp but that is a little ways down the road.
Did this option ever happen? I don't see it in the menu options
Yes, totally do not understand, why this option is not there. I have many ideas for Classes which are unable to create the normal way. One Idea would be a spellcaster using dark magic (like necromantic spells and alike) who got it's magic from a talented symbiont. You need to check with charisma, how much control you have over the symbiont (like speak to it on every rest/meditation/in the dreams) or if that symbiont even takes advantage of you, a bit like wild magic who is seducing who... Also alignment might change, psychic strugles... Sadly there are still no options to really outline such classes, well... only using books and paper meeting IRL or online only with 3rd party things, not using dndbeyond at all.
It's really odd how WOTC are deciding to go after a VTT for extra profits, but if you locked Homebrew classes behind the subscription pay wall, literally everyone would flock to DND Beyond.
Since it's been four years now... Are there any alternatives to create custom classes?
Doesn't seem like this feature is likely to be added.
We are just not using D&D Beyond to create character sheets.
We use Gsheet 2.1 characters, because those are also supported by Avrae and you can add things from homebrew and books you own. The tool itself only supports SRD material by default, but it is a Google spreadsheet so if you have a little skill it can be expanded easily.
The Issue is they want to force you to pay for their Official content, Twice even, if you want physical books, and not just work around it by home brewing it. But its really crippling the app, why would somebody bother with this Microtransaction app, when they can just do it on their own or in other apps. The App never be as popular as it can be until it allows us to do in the app what we end up doing outside the app. You would think getting people into the app, using it for homebrewing or whatever, would also encourage more purchasing because there's people in the app using it. You can easily implement some kind of check to see if people are replicating things from the official books, with AI and stuff. Also allow us to make content, and even sell content in DND beyond. Please send this comment to whom ever makes decisions because they are leaving so much money on the table not giving us what we want.
Could someone explain to me what the issue with making the homebrew backend of the site available is? I'm sure the community would be eternally motivated to work with the system regardless of the state it's in.
It's been 5-6 years since this was brought up man... where is this feature, or at the least where is the communication?
- folks will homebrew features that exist as paid content, baking them into classes to replicate features of a race, subclass or other.
- without a pre-built framework (such the limits of a class, when homebrewing sub-classes) there's potentially a scaling issue where the tree of options, essentially as large as people's imaginations, gets out of hand. If you're starting a class from scratch you could take it essentially anywhere, conceptually - having all the code to link the logic together so that people's wacky ideas work with all the automation that goes into these digital character sheets could potentially be a nightmare to work on.
~unless of course, the player creates that logic somehow. D&D exists as a series of balanced numbers and equations anyway, there's probably a smart way they could give a player a list of operators (if, and, more than, etc.), and a list of possible entities (hit points, d6 roll, longsword proficiency) to jam into an equation, so that players can build logic from the ground up. I'm imagining it like the visual node coding system in Unreal Engine. Honestly I think even if it was complex players would kinda love it.
OK D&DBeyond the gauntlet is thrown: give us a flow-chart-logic type of interface, similar to Unreal Engine's Node system. Let us use the fundamental building blocks of the D&D system and create our own classes from that. Aaaaaaaaaaaand..... go!
I have made a super cool class called a Malikus, its basically a super squishy spell caster (even more than wizard) but it has very powerful spells and lots of spell slots, its mainly focused on striking from the shadows then hiding.
Has there been any update to creating homebrew classes in D&D Beyond? I have an idea for a homebrew dragon rider class that I wanted to put into my homebrew collection for my players to use.
Man i really wish this feature would exist in d&d beyond i just want to be able to play a proper red mage class without having to write it all down on a physical character sheet :(
I'd be more than willing to pay for the ability to do that hell I'm already paying for the max tier subscription on this site anyway

Blank
It never did.

Legend says we're still waiting for the ability to homebrew classes
Appears to have fallen off their desk.

HOMEBREW
Backgrounds | Feats | Magic Items | Monsters | Races | Spells | Subclasses

Echoing the prior several years of comments. Would love this feature!

Feels like they basically stopped work on this website so I doubt this'll get implemented. Or they'll just make you pay for access to this feature

I kinda wanted to make a cultist class, just so I could see how the players of my campaign would react.
