Ever have one of those days where you come up with a great new character idea and you day dream how they can talk and how they'd behave and get rather excited to play them and then just sigh and dejectedly throw them into the NPC pile? Do you know my pain?
Lol, honestly the reason I became a DM was because I had a pile of characters I wanted to play. But I feel you. Sometimes you really work on a character only for the players to pay them little to no mind, or just kill them. Sometimes it be like dat.
I'm not a DM, but as a player I always enjoy the characters that my DM comes up with as well as the lore of the worlds they make. It can be a bit of a pain when I'm invested in an npc's story or the lore and others just want to press the skip button and move on, or just kill them because. Luckily my current group isn't like this but yeah.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that my players really enjoy the npcs that I come up with and there are a tonne of them they really like interacting with. However, it's often their choice with whom they interact and for how long.
But as a forever DM, as well as one of those people with a background in theatre, I do miss playing (and therefore focusing on) a single character and really fleshing them out and getting to interact with people and learn about that character. However, some of my best NPCs started their lives as characters I wanted to play rather than characters in a narrative. I have a tiefling mastermind who is a Zhent propagandist: Barnibus Willoughsby (not his real name). His whole deal is to make good arguments as to why the harpers have no moral superiority (and are maybe actually the bad guys? He presents the Zhentarum as a sort of secret society of ... mutual empowerment. Their lust for power is a means of liberation, whereas the Harpers? They seek to lock away and control knowledge-- under the delusion that we aren't to be trusted with freedom-- which hides the assumpsion that we too morally weak to run our own affairs.) He has been shockingly effective and more than a few of my parties have -- not being bad guys-- joined the Zhents. Which 100% takes me by surprise each time it happens. The whole character stemed from my experiences in adventurer's league and how uncritical many of the other players viewed the world, and I just wanted to play a character who, like Brave New World, just had irrefutably good arguements to justify villanous intentions.
This happens to me for characters, as well as villains, monsters, and random plot ideas that don't fit my campaign at all.

Guess what happened to me today?
My problem is I never have a DM :(
Which is the quintessential route to becoming a (forever) DM, I'm sad to say: having no-one around with enough motivation to run a stable game necessitates organising the games yourself. Not having a DM could be said to be exactly my problem too.
I personally love being a DM partially because of the character void. If i come up with a cool character concept and introduce them to my players they are a gage for me to see how interesting that character actually is. Some characters that I've made that I thought would be super interesting, they have no interest in and other characters that I thought would be total nothing characters become fleshed out characters. If something pops into my head and doesn't work, into the trash they go. More will come. Some of my favorite characters have come from combining the aspects that worked from characters that ended up in the trash.
I guess I'm also a writer so even if a character fails in game I can always use them in a different medium.
I would love to play... but I do not burn my best character concepts on NPCs the players will only interact with a few times or even a lot. Maybe it's selfish but I keep my very best character concepts for when I will someday play.

Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

See but it is a blessing in a curse. It has shown me that I love DMing, and that you don't have to play one character, but hundreds in your own world. It really is a blessing in a curse
Do your players know you feel that way? Are none of them willing to at least run a short prewritten module so you can be a PC at times?
DMing is something anyone can learn. They might not be great at it, but most players I've known are willing to do their DM a solid as a thanks for all their work.
Ask, you deserve the chance and the person just may find they like it.

That's happened to me a ton of times. In fact, my first ever PC as a player is in that Abyss of Forsaken Characters. That's the curse of creativity.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
