I could go one of two ways on this depending on the party's expectations and what has been established in the campaign regarding dragons and their young.
The dragon hatches as a "baby" that will basically be a non-combat NPC that exists strictly for roleplaying purposes. It's too young and weak to go out scouting or fighting.
The dragon hatches as a powerful, prideful wyrmling that has no interest in following around the party like a dog, but may be willing to do favors or something for the party from time to time if it feels they treated it right.
It's still evil, they just don't tend to punish when they do it. I didn't use the capital letter now did I? It's a minor sin, and that has indeed been true for quite a while now, although, I note, you can still be reported for it and a moderator is expected to take a look. Maybe they should remove that from the report function? It has been quite a while...
