The themes are what makes it challenging. Plus, it makes it easier to vote.
Just finished voting! Here’s my responses to some of the feedback I received:
Stylus of the Architect: ah, my old nemesis: consistently replacing certain words with other words. Yeah, “staff” was the base I used for the item. “Wand” was also the closest item type to “stylus” you can get, plus you can use it as a spellcasting focus. Not actually sure why I didn’t allow artificers to attune to it. The bonuses to spell attacks, spell save DCs, and AC are partially motivation to keep the item around instead of breaking it for a cool new city at the first opportunity.
College of Orchestration: I’m not currently sure what else I would call the Metamagic feature. As for the comparison between Powerful Chords and Unsettling Words, the difference is that Unsettling Words doesn’t only apply to spells you cast, and it can be used multiple times to increase the effectiveness of an ongoing effect, but I can see where the “unbalanced” claim comes from. Also, the Metamagic is explained as the bard gaining “control over magic characteristic of your archetype”, and the Metamagic options are expressions of that control, that same control that conductors exhibit, as explained in the beginning of the subclass. I’m not sure how to fix Magician’s Sonata.
The Old Man of the Sea: if a character is built to grapple, then this encounter would feel empowering and rewarding for investing so heavily. Great for them. I apologize for disappointing your expectation of an Ernest Hemingway reference. The shifted forms are drawn from Proteus of the Odyssey.
What would you call the College of Orchestration’s ability, instead of Metamagic? And how would you fix the Magician’s Sonata? Let me know so I can improve the subclass!

The idea is to create new homebrew that fits a theme that perhaps you haven’t explored yet (and if you have, there’s a good chance you can submit that), rather than waiting until there’s a theme that fits something you already made.

Not sure, maybe symphonies or movements or something like that?
Also, I am curious why you said the Tarrasque was not on theme. The theme description literally mentions the giant lizard that destroys cities, so I would say it is quite on theme.
Edit: Regarding snow elves, they are fine balance-wise when compared to dragonmarked races and Eladrin/Shadar-Kai elves; the PHB wood/high/dark elves are considerably weaker than all of them.
What would you call the College of Orchestration’s ability, instead of Metamagic?
There are all kinds of musical terms you could riff on that in some way or other refer to changing the notes as you play them -- calling it Dynamic Magic, for instance, would effectively make it a pun on dynamics, but there are plenty of other terms you could use: tempo rubato, improvisation, etc.

For what it's worth, I feel this way as well. I homebrew to fix stuff in the game that I'm not happy with or to realize a concept that I'm particularly interested in. I've started on ideas for the last couple of runs but didn't really follow through because I just wasn't feeling it. All of my entries have been stuff I already made that happened to fit the theme.

Also consider yourselves made aware of The Magnificent Guild of Homebrew, which is more a place to show off your homebrew for feedback without a competitive side.
The general purpose of this competition is for people to make a fresh homebrew in the time limits. The main reward is having a new piece of homebrew to use which you might not ever have made were it not for the themes! Though I share the sentiment that it would be nice if these were a little more quickfire, I've sat out of a couple where I had no inspiration for the theme, and it took a long time to get to the next one! But this is a community creation without hard and fast rules governing it, so the next person might give everyone 2 weeks to finish!
Looks like MilestoGo_24 took two categories to win the contest. Congrats!

Actually, the rules say you are the competition winner if you win two categories outright
Contest Winner: The entry with the highest individual score across the three categories will then be coronated as the contest winner and become the judge of the next competition. To clarify, this means that the highest of the 3 high scores is the winner.
If one person wins two or more categories, they win, regardless of if any of their individual scores are the highest.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.
