as I am sure many of you know, Wizards of the Coast published a new Sage Advice article on Thursday 1st October 2020.
D&D Beyond remain committed to ensuring that the latest errata and updates are applied to content. We'd also like to take a moment to discuss how we've applied this to content on the D&D Beyond site.
SAGE ADVICE
There are 47 new questions and answers, which we have added to the Sage Advice Compendium here on D&D Beyond.
We're also looking at better ways to allow easy linking to individual questions on that page as we know that's important to many of you.
ERRATA
Whenever Wizards of the Coast issues errata and we apply it, we track that in this forum thread, so you can always reference that to see what changes have happened and when.
We have already completed the errata for all text changes to sourcebooks, except for the changes discussed below for Orc, Kobold, and the Sea Lion.
RACES
There are four races that have received errata: Goliath, Triton, Orc, and Kobold.
Goliath. They gained cold resistance and a change of wording on their Mountain Born trait. These changes were already made earlier this year when the Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden sourcebook was published, including these changes to the Goliath character race.
Triton. They gained darkvision and the wording was changed for the features: Control Air and Water, and Guardian of the Depths. Both of these changes were implemented earlier this year, as part of the release of Mythic Odysseys of Theros.
Orc. They have lost their ability score penalty to intelligence. They have also lost their Menacing trait, which has been replaced with the Primal Intuition trait. completed
Kobold. They have lost their ability score penalty to strength. completed
For both Orc and Kobold, we've been paying attention to feedback from the community and that tells us that people are concerned that these errata changes are going to be applied directly to their existing Orc/Kobold characters and they don't want that to happen.
As such, we have taken some extra time to review a way of handling this, which we plan to implement on Tuesday 13th October 2020. Update: this has now been completed, as of Tuesday 13th October 2020.
We will not be forcing the orc/kobold errata changes on existing characters.
We shall be archiving the current Orc & Kobold races. This means that you'll see the name of the race change to Orc (archived) or Kobold (archived) respectively. At the same time, we will make the new versions of Orc and Kobold live.
From that point, any characters that are selecting a race of Orc or Kobold, will be selecting the updated version, with the errata applied.
If you have an existing Orc or Kobold character and would like the errata changes applied to your character, then (after Tuesday) just edit the character with the character builder and change their race from Orc (archived) to Orc, or from Kobold (archived) to Kobold. Please note that once you change the race of a character from Orc (archived) or Kobold (archived) to another race, you will not be able to change it back again.
As always, you are welcome to make a homebrew copy any time before Tuesday, but please don't publish it to the community - that's not allowed, as it's still licensed content.
MONSTERS
The (CR ½) Sea Lion that was published in Ghosts of Saltmarsh is going away, to be replaced with the (CR 5) [Tooltip Not Found] first published in Tales from the Yawning Portal.
We are aware that, as the (CR ½) version of the Sea Lion is a beast, some characters may have one as a pet, companion or even a wildshape form.
As such, we want to make sure that those characters don't lose anything as part of this change and won't be removing the (CR ½) version of the Sea Lion until Tuesday 13th October. Update: this has now been completed, as of Tuesday 13th October 2020.
If you wish to, you can make a homebrew copy any time before then to keep your own version.
Additionally, we shall be archiving the (CR ½) version of the Sea Lion, rather than deleting it, which means that any characters who have one added to their character sheet via the EXTRAS section will still see it there.
Any encounters that have been built with the Encounter Builder that use the (CR ½) version of the Sea Lion will remain intact and can be run as designed.
Thank you!
Notes: Update 13th October 2020 - all errata changes now completed
If you are archiving them instead of removing them forever, why don’t you leave the archived versions as alternate options for us to choose when we make characters?
I always found negative modifiers to be quite fun and I’m kind of disappointed to see them go away.

It's part of our commitment to always present the up-to-date D&D rules, as per Wizards of the Coast publications.
You can create characters now with the current Orc or Kobold to use later, or copy the current race to your own homebrew collection.

You can still go to the stat on the character sheet and apply a -2 modifier to the "Other Modifier" if you're so inclined.
Can you add a popup alert -- similar to the one you get when deleting a character -- for changing a PC's race from the archived versions of Orc and Kobold? Something to help people who don't necessarily read Sage Advice or forum threads. Or who do and might forget the part about not being able to change back.
Why are you removing the CR 1/2 Sea Lion if it's a valid monster from a book? It's a completely different creature from the CR 5 monstrosity. There's no conflict besides the name, and they've been coexisting since GoS without issues. Am I missing something?

I'm guessing because of the double name and how dndbeyond works. Personally, I think they could rename the Beast to "Lion seal" which is a real animal and solve the problem. But that would not be accurate from the books, so that is something that Wizards of the Coast should do.
As mentioned, the GoS errata itself is replacing the old sea lion statblock (a beast) wholesale with a different one (the [Tooltip Not Found] from White Plume Mountain in Tales from the Yawning Portal). Therefore, DDB's just matching that official change.
I think a good way to handle it in that case is just to have Adam Bradford (BadEye) publish the old sea lion beast statblock as public homebrew, as was done with the UA versions of the Eberron races (I believe). Unlike with the errata to orc and kobold (or most errata, really), the sea lion beast statblock is an entirely different statblock from the one it's being replaced with. It'd just be a nice public service to publish it as "homebrew" to handle the rebuilding of that beast statblock when it stops being an official thing. (I'm sure you'd need to get WotC's permission for this, of course.)

With the errata released last week, the CR ½ version of the Sea Lion no longer exists in any official D&D published sourcebook.
We are, as always, ensuring that the D&D Beyond system matches the latest versions of the rules published by Wizards of the Coast and this means removing the CR ½ version of the Sea Lion.
As an action on your turn, you can cower pathetically to distract nearby foes. Until the end of your next turn, your allies gain advantage on attack rolls against enemies within 10 feet of you that can see you. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Is this still the official Kobold racial trait? Cause frankly this is more embarrassing, pathetic and belittling than a -2 to a stat.
wizard of the coast fears another third edition break down where optimisers always cherry pick the best races to go with the best classes. and thus in fifth edition, they removed all minuses to stats. To me thats a big problem, because basically they are now making every races the same. whats it gonna be next... gnomes with +2 strength so they can make great barbarians ? have to tell you, they are still great barbarians even if you put minuses to them.
i honestly hate this errata, even more after jeremy said to us plainly that errata was never done to enforce balance in the game, and yet has started making drastic changes to how people play. like the contagion poison thing which renders the spell useless since most creatures are immune to poison. or how the divine smite of paladins really really makes wizards or sorcerer much too powerfull by allowing them to smite with only 2 levels of paladin. did you ever think booming blade, which is an almighty spell could be actually overpowered by just enabling it to smite as well ?!! i don't think you ever thought that a level 5 wizard/paladin could do 5d8 by just casting a cantrip !
honestly, the worse is removing minuses to stats... that entirely removes the actual distinction between races. i was happy when i saw you had rethought it and added minuses back, but now they seem to think they were wrong in doing so and now have errata that out as well... leaving orcs and kobolds the very same as their races equivalent. basically there is no reason to go orc instead of goliath... the only thing that made orc great was the fact they had minuses, because role play wise that made it very different to play... before that, it was mechanically enforced to play that way. that was better... i get the fact they want people to choose their skin for the character... but this is ridiculous... goliaths and orcs now have the same stats and abilities... its like we're in overwatch and simply change skins for sake of changing skins... i hate that... ipreffered when each race had their pros and cons... nobody wants characters with all pros and no cons !

honestly, the worse is removing minuses to stats... that entirely removes the actual distinction between races.
yeah, no, that totally makes sense that a lack of negatives makes all races exactly the same, like, look at how changelings can't shapeshift, and dragonborn don't have breath weapons, and aarakocra don't have wings, and elves don't have a dedicated wizard subclass....
you get the point. the races are still just as varied as they ever were because they're different, not because some are better or worse at some things than others. in 5e, if there's a fish and a bird with the same ability score spread, does that make a fish a bird in your eyes?
How will this affect HomeBrew Sub-races and Variants based off the Kobold and Orc? Will the I have to redo/fix everything based on the updated Races?
Any homebrew variants created for the Orc & Kobold will stay exactly as they are, because they're based on the version that we're archiving. Neither race is designed to have subraces, but the same will apply. If you wish to update your homebrew to match the errata, that will be your decision to make.
The reason we didn't just implement these changes immediately and directly is because we wanted to make sure that we caused the least disruption possible to people's characters & homebrew.

and it totally makes sense that reguardless of which races you choose you get the most important thing int he game, stats. i mean, take whoever you want and gain the stats you want reguardless. now thats a not at all a poor design. at that point i'm wondering, why not just let the players choose their stats reguardless of what race they choose. whats not weirds at all, is that those who actual cryed about orcs and kobolds minuses were totally a minority, all of the others were fine with it. it made sense. it was normal. yet apparently wizard decideed to listen to the minority of players who just cryed because they didn't want a low stat character.
if wotc truly wanted us to have the charcter we wanted to beginw ith... then they should of gone the pathfinder way and just give us point and make our own race from the get go.the more they remove minuses, the more i feel like races are just interchangeable skins. and yes, i could take aarakocra and decide its a flying fish ! i'm making a lot of homebrews for my players and most often then not, i can just reskin an actual race. because there is next to no distinction between them. Take an ORC for exemple and then look at the goliath... best exemple ever, both of them are totally interchangeable. both of them could literally be orc or goliath. i could make an orc and say its a goliath and i could pick an orc and say its a goliath.
sorry but amphibian ability doesn't make the fish if you ask me. the same way aarakocra having a flying speed doesn't make it the bird. what makes races what they are, is their "PROs" and "CONs" if there is no cons then whats the point. what makes d&d what it is, is the pros and cons of each classes and races. the more they remove, the less differences between races there is. i get they want a very easy to grasp concept, but there is a limit to how much you should remove. my opinion, and i'm not the only one who thinks this way... is that the minuses made kobold and orcs much more individuals then any other races. and now they screwed that up because of a minority who couldn'T handle minuses for their optimising stand point.

The 1/2 CR Sea Lion is used in the adventure module "Locathah Rising" for the pre-made character Undertow.
Please consider keeping the 1/2 CR Sea Lion or otherwise coming up with a solution so that we may utilize Undertow.
Thank you.
