I want to reveal to my cleric that they carry magic inside and don’t need their god, but I don’t want to stop them from being the build they want.
In my campaign, magic is extremely scarce and hunted/revered. One PC is an aasimaar cleric going through a crisis of faith about their church hunting witches. They were lauded as a hero in a war, and for their prowess in magic. I want to reveal that they’re actually using their own magic to bolster their God’s given spells, but offering an entire change of class seems extreme.
What’s the best multiclass option? Or how could I homebrew it in a way where they get to emphasize their innate magic while not taking away from their Cleric spell abilities?
Just say that their magic comes from within and *poof*! It does! There are a total of 0 mechanics linking the casting of cleric spells to a diety. Spell sources are 100% flavor and thus can be changed to whatever you want, providing that the other players are cool with it. You may want to think through how to describe spell preparation in this new light, but honestly you don't need to change any mechanics to do this, and if you don't need to you generally shouldn't.

You might get better answers in the DM’s forum. Have you considered the divine soul sorcerer?
