Recently I discovered an article saying that paladin are half baked clerics.
However if you ask me I think that this is a load of gobbledegook and nonsense.
What are your opinions on this statement ?

I am a giant cat who lives in the Underdark, I am friends with Master Demigorgon and will not hesitate to eat you. If you survive my deadly bite you will desolve in my horrid stomach acids, if by Jove you manage to survive that, well mr Lucky unkillable John Mclane, I eat my turds.
They’re not half-baked: they’re sautéed with extra spices and less sugar. Paladins serve an entirely different purpose than clerics: even war clerics are priests of their deity, channeling divine magic into combat. However, paladins are not priests any more than a ranger is a hippie. Paladins are holy warriors, channeling conviction into divine magic to strike down the enemy. It’s a significant differentiation.

I just have to point out that paladins have no need to be holy warriors. They were in past editions, and certainly can be in this one, but there’s no need for paladins to have anything to do with a god, in spite of having a couple powers with “divine” in the name. They are powered by their oaths. These can be made to a god, but don’t have to be. Glory and crown jump out as the most obvious examples of not needing a god, but none of them truly do. As it says in the class description: Although many paladins are devoted to gods of good, a paladin’s power comes as much from a commitment to justice itself as it does from a god.
“Many are devoted to the gods of good” Many, not all.
To the OP: see above. Paladins, unlike clerics, don’t have to serve any kind of higher power.

I have more fun with Paladins, but clerics are much stronger IMO. Paladins aren’t really “half-baked,” though — their mechanics are distinct and they have tons of variety in subclasses.

Paladins are half caster that share access to many cleric spells and feature such as Channel Divinity, but they have many unique spells and features of their own whipped into a fully cooked class of it's own. Also their critical hit can get extra bacon 🥓
While I do believe Clerics are better by a long shot, Paladins are far from half-baked. They're better at painting the walls with blood, and can give out some good heals. The buffs they give with their aura are insane, although Clerics have better Channel Divinity. The main criticism for Paladins is that they try to be Clerics and fail, which is just wrong. Paladins are their own class, although they can seem similar.
Clerics and Paladins both appear in the same sort of design space, but Clerics are primarily spellcasters with the ability to hit with their weapon, whilst Paladins are primarily warriors with the ability to cast some spells.
So depending on the angle of the statement in question; "half-baked Cleric"? As a spellcaster? Sure. As a martial? Not really.
Paladins gets extra attack and Improved Smite to empower all their weapon attacks, outside of their Oaths that generally grant some bonus to their weapon attacks/combat impact. And of course they can burn spell slots to Smite spells to empower a weapon attack too. Clerics generally have to cast spells like Spirit Guardians to keep up in damage.
As for healing, it is generally considered not worth the time to heal in combat, with the exception of high level spells like Mass Cure Wounds/Heal/Mass Heal, and the Paladin's Lay on Hands class feature which can dump all of the healing pool into healing a player at touch range as an action (and in the new Player's Handbook 2024 it looks like it will get reduced to a bonus action). Outside combat, the cleric usually shines in healing up the party.

That article must have been written by a paladin player. Paladins can only wish they were good enough to be called half-baked Clerics. :P
