The newly released Unearthed Arcana -Sidekicks are not yet included in dndbeyond, yet its been mentioned for the upcoming baldurs gate adventure. Are we going to be able to test it as other UA anytime soon?
As a customer, I would very much appreciate the ability to use D&D Beyond to build sidekick NPCs using the character creator. (Apparently the new "Essentials Kit" sidekick rules are more narrow and apply only to 1-2 player games, so I think the UA as published is still really "current").
While the sidekick option added in the new box set has a lot of great potential, it is limited by the fact that sidekicks only level to level 6. Are we to assume that after level 6, sidekicks are no longer available? Personally, I loved the sidekick UA article and my halfling druid is going to be really upset if he can no longer travel with his best friend Merlin anymore (who happens to be a white siberian tiger).
For now, the sidekicks in the Essentials Kit only level to 6, but there are two follow-up adventures being created as well. No guarantees, but these may have include levelling those sidekicks to higher level.

That makes sense. I really would like to be able to create them separately from player character sheets, though, since it's a great framework for NPCs.
I believe that a separate Sidekick creator is planned or in the works. I can't find the post about it though.
Interesting. As a DM, I could use a whole "NPC manager", which would allow me to create "cards" for any of these four types — basically, the three from NPC Statistics in the DMG plus Sidekicks:
No-stat-block NPCs (ideally using the tables from DMG Chapter 4, maybe with a random generator or even better "controlled random" where you pick and alignment and the rest is random to but matches the alignment).
Monster stat blocks (but, with a notes section and editable features)
Regular PC-class characters using the normal character builder

You can build them with the homebrew monster tools; that wouldn't allow leveling, though, so you'd have to do what DDB did and create a new one for each level. If the sidekick rules show up in more products--especially if official (i.e. non-UA) rules are ever published that go all the way to 20, I'm guessing DDB will create a way to make them here so they an be leveled up. But that's just a guess from a hopeful customer: I have no official word on that.
A sidekick builder would be super useful, for sure. I read an interesting discussion elsewhere about using Sidekicks as minimalist characters to allow for a "character funnel" type of start to a campaign (ala Dungeon Crawl Classics for those familiar). You start with 3 or 4 very basic characters and run through a starter adventure. Most die, and you then choose one of your survivors to build out as a full character to move ahead with. These seem like a great way to do that in 5E.

DDB only adds UA character options. It doesn't playtest optional rules and the like (consider water vehicles in Saltmarsh for example).
I am curious how (or if) they will implement sidekicks when they are official though.
The Essentials Kit adds sidekicks though, and D&D Beyond will be supporting that product. ;)

You are both correct, which is what makes me wonder:) this is not a character option, yet incoming feature:)
