If you're anything like me, you probably love races. Like, love races. Having all these cool little civilizations to sprinkle in your world like that one meme of the guy salting a steak is extremely fun, but even with the 40+ official races WotC currently has, there are still a few places where they just kind of... lack.
So I'll ask but a copper for your thoughts! What sort of official races and stuff might be nice to have for 5e?
We got cats, we got birds, we got snakes, lizards, tortles, bunnies, bulls, elephants, fish, and frogs. Gonna have Monkeys and Hippos and Insect people.
Why no dogs. Why they hating on man's best friend?
4e had a number of fun races that I would love to see in 5e, including:
- Shardminds - a race of crystalline psionics.
- Wilden - a more primal Feywild race.
- Hamadryad.
- Bladelings - spiky humanoids.
And a few others.
I would also like to see some races representing mythical creatures from cultures generally under represented in D&D races (which tend to be very Euro-centric). A canon (and actually playable) version of the Anubis-inspired race we saw in the Amonkhet pamphlet. Kitsune from Japan. Any number of interesting potential races from the countless cultures of Africa, Australia, and the Americas. There is a lot of non-European culture that Wizards has not exploring yet, all of which could be the basis for their own plane with it’s own unique and new playable races.
Agreed for dogmen. Plant people also seem like an obvious gap. Would also like to see a construct race that isn't specifically designed to be a living weapon.
I want to see some unique oddball races. Give me Ooze people, Give me playable elemental (more than Genasi), Give me awakened plants, Aberrant beholder-kin, Monstrous Beheir Bloods, Liberated Shadows, GIVE ME THE WEIRDOS!

Yes! I absolutely adored the ideas of the khenra and and the naga from PS:A, though I agree, they do need a little tweaking. The khenra's dependency on its twin, for example.
We don't know that for sure. I'm also talking more Oblex spawn style ooze, not Amoeba style but I'll take what I can get I suppose.
We do - it is confirmed in the “Dragonlance and Other Announcements You Missed From D&D Direct” article that Plasmoids would be given their own race. Everything beyond that basic class description is flavour one can add on their own and/or represent with class choices.

Lots of races in one world is bad for the world because it's unimmersive - multiple competitors for the same niche wipe each other out. That's why humans are alone in their genus.
Lots of races in the *game* is good because it gives the DM more spices in their spice rack for choosing which to include in their world.
In that vein, since we're getting rules for bug and sponge people and already have mammals, birds, and reptiles, I'd say the lowest hanging fruit is amphibians and fish (not counting Grung or Locathah due to being in weird not-supplements), followed by playable plants/fungus.
Going in the other direction, figuring out ways to make playable versions of various monsters would appear to scratch an itch many players seem to have. For example, a Gnoll variant possessing free will is reliably a popular idea among players.

I wholeheartedly agree. I love to add races to my world, and i do try to collect 'em like Pokemon, but I tend to spread them out enough so it's not super cramped. Maybe six or so different unique races per continent, perhaps!
Would also like to see a construct race that isn't specifically designed to be a living weapon.
We will be getting Ooze people and a mechanical gnome construct race in Spelljammer. Also bug people, hippo people, and ape people.
I wasn't thrilled with them in the playtest material, but we'll see how it turns out. I think I would probably just make my own, if I ended up having a player interested in playing another construct. (All the "construct stuff" is basically settled, it's just a matter of the "other stuff," like the armor bonus or Vedalken skill Guidance nonsense. Season to taste.)
Llama, cause it's funny, I literally made one in homebrew races.
Being serious, I'de like a robot race with different variations (maybe one like FCG on critical role, maybe one like the guardian race from highrollersdnd).
I'd like to see races with a mechanical effect that actually has an effect, instead of just "human with funny makeup."
For example, a fungus race with some notes about how Mazlow's pyramid doesn't apply. Or a plant race that requires sunlight as well as food.
These ideas give off big myconid and Starbound Floran energy, respectively. It'd be really cool to see, especially in the new Spelljammer material coming up!

My thoughts exactly! Where are all the pupperinos? Closest we got to a legitimate canine race were the shifters and lycanthropy!

I liked hengeyokai from 4e. Pretty much a catch-all for people who want to play animal-people.
I'd like to see a plant-based race or two. Dryad, wilden, entbaby, whatever.
My homebrew subclasses (full list here)
(Artificer) Swordmage | Glasswright | (Barbarian) Path of the Savage Embrace
(Bard) College of Dance | (Fighter) Warlord | Cannoneer
(Monk) Way of the Elements | (Ranger) Blade Dancer
(Rogue) DaggerMaster | Inquisitor | (Sorcerer) Riftwalker | Spellfist
(Warlock) The Swarm

Ducks!
But I don't know if Runequest have IP protection on them.

Hengeyokai, shen, spellcales, raptorans, fraals(little gray alien), blue (psionic gobling subrace)..
As a longtime Planescape fan, I'd love to see bariaur and and rogue modrons.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!
