I don't think I'll be using the Inspiration button in either of my current campaigns -- in one we don't have a bard, and in the other I am the bard, and I don't know that our DM will be giving inspiration -- but one thing that might make it a little more useful would be if it also told you what die you had? I don't know if that would be done by clicking on it multiple times or scrolling or turning it into multiple smaller buttons, but something so that at a glance you remember not only that you have inspiration, but that it's a d6 or a d8 would be useful.

While I like the new features, I really struggle with this Character Sheet format. I like the new features but I liked the old format much better.
Having played with the sheet now, I found that it made things harder at the table. The search bar was helpful in finding gear faster but it required my players to type. We play in my apartment and it's a small space. We don't have room for everyone to sit at the table and have a computer open. Primarily we use phones and Ipads. Typing on mobile devices because it slowed down session time. Also, the need to constantly navigate between tabs using a menu frustrated my players.
Something that would immediately help would be allowing users to swipe or scroll between the pages, instead of having to click the navigation bubble. I think it's safe to say that the smaller number of 'clicks' required to get to what we need, the more positive the system feels. With the current system there seems to be many steps (at least for mobile device users) required in order to make something happen.
I should probably add some context. My group and I are pretty new to this. We have very little experience dealing with character sheets and the like. Some of the people at the table find the character sheet confusing - it's full of boxes and sections and the writing on them is less clear and obvious. D&D Beyond, in it's old incarnation felt more familiar to us; it operated like other programs we are familiar with. It actually made getting into D&D easier for everyone. I'm going to assume that we will not have the option to choose our preferred layout but I'd really like that.
Maybe we just need a 'less hardcore' option because we are new.
This is a really good post that helped me better understand some of the sticking points people are having.
I think a couple things on the new sheet should help clear some of this up, one of the biggest being putting labels on top of the boxes instead of underneath them! I do like this idea of a "less hardcore" mode, though--something that still has the functionality of the new sheet, using its logic, but is organized in a more familiar manner for those who came to the game with DDB and really clicked with the old sheet. Even if there were just more theme/skinning options for the sheet--maybe one that makes the more well-defined boxes with clear, bold text headings organized in a similar manner as the old sheet. There are some things that I think definitely should not go back to the old ways--the "features" box was a clustercuss of collapsables that made it frankly impossible to find much of what you needed at any given time--but I think a "DDB Classic" (or whatever) theme could work. Obviously I don't know how the programming side of it works but it seems like that'd be pretty feasible. Would that help to address some of those concerns, do you think?
It also seems super clear at this point that the mobile version is a huge sticking point for folks, and, from what it seems to me, the main way that most of the folks who do not like the new sheet seem to engage with the sheet at the table. Hopefully the dev team can come up with a solution that works for folks!
I think you actually made my point clearer than I made it - which is great. I sometimes have a hard time getting my thoughts to the page. This post was very much appreciated. I think the idea of a 'DDB Classic' theme is sort of what I am after.
I really like D&D and I am having so much fun with this game. In all honesty, my group probably would not have remained together if we weren't using D&D Beyond though. Personally, I think one of the biggest barriers into the game is the way it's presented. I'm not trying to say that Character Sheets are stupid or anything like that - i'm sure that if you've been playing a while they are perfectly usable. I can say that as a person coming into the hobby though they are something quite unlike anything a lot of us have experienced.
A "DDB Classic" theme is not feasible from either a technical or user interface standpoint.
While the technical challenges would be boring for me to talk about, the more relate-able thing is concerning the UI. We added so much entirely new functionality with this revamp that we couldn't really find a way to make that work in the old interface without it being too cumbersome. Think trying to fit another meal course onto an already full table.
One of our core tenets for DDB (we have it posted all over the place in our offices and talk about it on a daily basis) is "Be Accessible - We will empower beginners and enable veterans, anywhere, on any type of device." This is a major goal for us, but that does not mean it is easy (at all). We want to strike the balance between being what new and old players need and be usable on all the devices folks use today, and we will keep chasing that dream.
Since we will not be able to have a "classic" view, I encourage everyone to share feedback on what specifically you find challenging or less usable with the new format (instead of the generalization of "I don't like it"). That is something we can work with to make intentional changes in the name of that balance. For instance, the feedback you gave about swiping versus the floating nav button is really useful, and I'll share a general update in this thread in a little while that addresses where our thoughts are on that right now.
I ask for patience as we analyze the feedback. Change is hard for everyone, and the feedback we have received regarding where we are now with the sheet has been majorly positive. Of course we love to see that after all the hard work that has gone into it, but we truly do care about what people are sharing here and we will use it to improve.
Thanks!
Thank you for the response.
I also saw that you are going to try and fit it on the 10.5 iPads and you may bring back screen sliding for the mobile. That would be awesome!
I've played a little more since my last post and we ran into some more issues. Custom items that recharge on a long rest don't seem to refresh when clicking the Long Rest button. We also have some magical items that refresh 'At Dawn'. In the present mode, we have to go and manually refresh all these items; I believe it worked this way prior to the character sheet update as well but it was easier to manage because everything was listed in that 'Limited Use' bar and you could just tap the 'Used' button on each item. Now, in order to do this we have to manually search for each item in the inventory, click the item and then click the checkbox.
If it could be fixed so when the 'Long Rest' button was clicked, custom items with the 'Long Rest' recharge automatically refreshed, that would help a lot. I think the inclusion of a 'Dawn' button would also help - it could basically do this same thing for 'At Dawn' items.
The other thing is a lot of information is displayed on the sheet. For example, under Class Traits, it will say things like:
Expanded Spell ListPHB108
Additional spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
One player commented that this is not really information they need the majority of the time when they are playing. Perhaps there could be an option to hide this sort of thing so the sections are not cluttered and players need to do less scanning and scrolling to find what they need.
Thanks for the time you are taking to process out feedback.
I hope that if screen sliding is brought back, that the menu is also available. I disliked the sliding on mobile in the last sheet, as you couldn't just jump to the page you needed, you had to slide until you found it. Love that the new sheet lets me jump where I need to be. However I would still prefer having a more desktop-like view on my tablet in landscape mode, that was how I used the old sheet and it was at its best in that format. Hoping that becomes possible as you guys work on the smaller resolution.

As I mentioned, if we reintroduced swiping, the menu will definitely still be there - we have too many people that like the menu and disliked swiping.
The point would be to try to cater to both preferences. It's mostly impossible to make everyone happy, but if I try to give as much happiness to as many as I can. =D

I am assuming you guys saw it, but there was a suggestion posted about a hybrid view for smaller tablets/mobile devices. Might be a happy middle ground. i.e. have a stagnant section on the left for ability/save scores and proficiency stats. Area on the right that can either swipe or use the menu to switch through modules like Combat/Actions/Spells/Actions/Feats (still think anything related to combat should be combined), Equipment, Notes, and Description. Top bar with health, AC, rest options, etc.
A lot of these seem to be due to the PDF reader you're using, not anything to do with the PDF itself.
Thanks for the heads up, do you have a copy available that does show Enemies, backgrounds and so forth and allows you to enter a character / organization image?
Also, my Shortbow proficiency is missing when choosing Wood Elf.

It would be nice if the subsections were swipable ro move back and forth between them. Pop out the sidebar when you tap something so there's always context, and slide it back in with a swipe on the sidebar (like it behaves now). I'm not sure of the technical challenges of contextual swiping though.
Also finally id like to throw my vote in for the Moon Druid wild shape feature overwriting the main wild shape feature, in the actions section. Still think the features and traits section should show every feature received even if superseded.
I would plus one this, but I think it needs more like plus a million. I would also love to see the resource tracking for it go to the Bonus Action tab since that's really where it belongs.
Moon Druids can wild shape as both an action and a bonus action. It belongs in both places.

I don't think I'll be using the Inspiration button in either of my current campaigns -- in one we don't have a bard, and in the other I am the bard, and I don't know that our DM will be giving inspiration -- but one thing that might make it a little more useful would be if it also told you what die you had? So this is only for inspiration that gives you advantage, then? And there is no way on the sheet to track if someone has been given inspiration by a bard in their party?

A quick item I noticed, Magic Missile does not appear to be increasing the dart count when casting at 2nd level or higher. It still lists 3 darts and I could see my PCs forgetting to increase the number.
Yeah. We used the character sheet this weekend at a gaming gathering, both on laptop and on phones. I'll try to post more detailed feedback when I have time, but the short of it is that all versions were well liked. And I found the phone version much easier to use than I anticipated. Really like the menu.
On the iPad mini I‘m missing all spell symbols unless I deliberately click show Desktop site, which is completely the same, but includes symbols for Rituals, Concentration and damage types. Also our wizard is lamenting the lack of seeing all his ritual spells.

Is it possible to also pull the character’s skill bonus? I can manually calculate this with the math functions, but access to the calculated skill would be handier so that I don’t have to go back and edit when a player gains a new proficiency or expertise.
Snippet codes with math return a + sign before the number, but a single call to a variable does not. There are built in snippets that have a double + sign because of this.

Tags are not processed in a snippet. Is there a way to get minor formatting like Markdown added in or a way to have something like Acrobatics in the text open the side window to Acrobatics if the text is touched. An underline or some way of showing it’s a link would be great.

I know this is down the road , so I want to suggest that access to this data in a snippet would be cool as well as the ability to show quantity and charges in a numeric format.
Something I'd like to see which I don't know if it's been mentioned. It would be nice if Ammunition that is in your equipment also showed in the Combat area so you can adjust it as it gets used and not have to go back and forth between equipment and combat.
Otherwise loving the new look and layout.

Hi there Pocketmouse, the inspiration box isn't referring to the Bard Ability of the same name, it's referring to the core mechanic of inspiration for 5th edition.
