I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find it. Do physical books have some code that would allow them to also be used on dndbeyond?
The short answer is, sadly, "No." The longer answer is in the second of the links in my signature. That thread should have all the answers for you.
Do forgive if I come off brusque. There are days we get this question five times in five separate threads, and unfortunately most people are very upset at the answer and tend to start forum fights. There is always a distinct air of "here we go again..." surrounding the question.
No - you need to rebuy material if you already have a physical copy. There is a couple of exceptions - the essentials kit came with a code to get a digital copy, and recently the Shadow of the Draogn Queen did a physical/digital bundle option as well - but otherwise, the physical and digital content is completely separate.
Dndbeyond does break down content so players can buy individual subclasses etc - but ultimately, you are looking to invest in separate digital access license (e.g. it's not a pdf you can download, but an unlock for accessing the content on the site).
Sometimes, when you have the physical books and don't feel like paying full price for the digital, you can wait for deals. Last one was Cyber Monday where i was able to buy the mega bundle at arround 25-30% off....basically covering part of the currency exchange rate between CAN to US. They always do deals from time to time....but cyber monday is usually the biggest one.
I think it was said that from now on, you will be able to buy the digital and physical book together through the site. I did buy the dragon lance one but i had to wait for its release as pre-order was only digital. I think i've saved overall 10$ from if i would have bought physical on amazon.ca and digital on the site.
Will there be any future physical/digital bundles like this now that DND is with Wizards? I did this with the DragonQueen and it was a nice deal
Probably. Nobody knows, not even WotC, since it's an experiment, but it'll probably happen in some form or another at least for awhile as they try to figure out how to maximise profit from it.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

It should be noted that there was a physical-digital bundle for Keys from the Golden Vault, so I expect this will be pretty standard moving forward.

I don't think WOTC even knows for sure anymore. As development happens, things tend to change. They may be trying to make that so, but at the end of the day, it may prove impossible.
But, I think because they own DnDBeyond, I do believe the new system will update the old here..so if you already own the players handbook on DnDB, it will probably update the rules themselves to fit with the new system.
Personally, I buy races, spells and such here on DnDB, and I buy the adventures on my VTT (Roll20). If there were a way to import adventures from here into VTTs, I would only buy the adventures here.
I'm sorry but I am pretty sure I heard WOTC say they'd make older books backwards compatible.
So are we saying that's not true and they've backtracked on that? That's kinda scummy.
Their mention of backwards compatibility applied to OneDnD content to be implemented in the current edition, and nothing to do with older physical models prior to OneDnD being redeemable for digital purchases on DnD Beyond.
Because they are separate conveniences on the same products. It's not different than buying a book, and then expecting to go see the movie in theaters for free because you read it first. Of course it's "moneygrabby", that is part of business to fund the ability to access it through multiple conveniences.
EDIT: There Is also no realistic, non-exploitable way to make older purchases retroactively backwards compatible.
You don't need to pay for it. You can keep using your existing books with DDBs tools. No one is twisting your arm to buy the updated version.
Which took the time and effort of a lot of people to create and those people deserve to be compensated for their work, by the way. Just because it has the same title doesn't mean it's the same book with a new cover slapped on.
The only way WotC could do rolling content updates on old purchases is if they switched their focus to other revenue streams like micro transactions and additional subscription fees. Which most people would probably agree feels even more money-grabby (and will probably happen eventually).

I totally get it and figured that was the case, but the search function wasn't working on my phone so it is what it is.

We will see how it evolves

Maybe they'll do a Humble Bundle :)

Make older books backward compatible? That doesn't make any sense.
Your comment is also not relevant to this thread which is about physical books and access to the digital versions here.

Well that sucks.
Bit moneygrabby in my honest opinion too, like why do I need to pay for something twice?
