b) He's been a survivalist, living off the land, his entire life.
c) He's only 16 and very naive about how the world works.
d) Currently, the campaign is in jungle environments, so metal caltrops are what he has. He has Entangle and will most likely be getting Heat Metal, Snare & Spike Growth at some point.
e) he's a kid, so he's got all of these lofty visions : a caltrop for any dungeon type (glass caltrops = slick tile surfaces & stone, wood caltrops : dungeons, staircases, not stone situations, metal caltrops = outdoors, jungle, pits & traps)
f) for this last session, he fixed a bunch of broken tables/barstools from the fight the night before at the bar, renovated his inn room by adding crown molding, fixed a chicken coop and some horse carts.
g) he innovates (or at least thinks he does). This is his first forray into civilization and his logic process is : "this is broken. i'm going to fix it", so he goes around the towns just fixing random things and oblivious to anything going on around him. Sometimes, he gets coins given to him or special perks, but he only does the mending stuff because he sees that it's broken and it should be made whole. (outwardly, he's perceived as a doogooder kid, but inwardly, he's just trying to make his surroundings better and help people smile more)
h) Sadly, Ice Knife is the only decent range attack spell he has and he can't really use that too much because he's the only healer in the party and needs to keep the Cure Wounds option open to help. We're talking Level 2, so he focuses on fixing things, changing terrain and wildshaping into things to make them go prone or disadvantage. I view him more as "Tech Support" for the party.
What would the DC be on noticing Caltrops on the ground? Or are they automatically seen by enemies unless hidden in some way?
If they're not hidden then automatically seen. Caltrops are very noticeable. It's actually intended, the point is by scattering them behind you it might make the enemy chasing you stop to avoid injury and have to proceed slowly.
If you're trying to hide them for a trap there's no set rule so I'd probably make it Intelligence (Stealth) check - intelligence as it's a mental exercise in how best to disguise them and stealth becuse the better you are at hiding yourself the better you are at hiding other things. This check sets the DC to be contested by the enemy's usual wisdom (perception) (passive score if not actively paying attention).

You went Int (Stealth), I was going to go either Wis (Slight of Hand) or Dex (Deception).
I prefer "describe to me how you want to go about hiding them" and go from there. It can (and should) be approached from different angles by different archetypes.

I believe the effects of caltrops and Spike Growth stack (though not sure...) :)
Hi there! I'm a Christian musician based in Canada :)
Well, Spike Growth costs a level 2 spell slot, whereas caltrops cost 1 gp and some carry capacity to use as many as you want.
