Simple question asked in the title. There is quite a lot to be hyped about from the book, but based on some of the leaks, there is quite a lot that is underwhelming. For me, it is probably the sheer lack of new spells. Yes, there are some, but XGtE had 93 spells, and TCoE has just over 20 spells. In all, there are less spells in this book than there are subclasses (and that's including the reprinted spells and excluding the reprinted subclasses).
So, what about you? I'd like to say I am excited to hear your thoughts, but that's kind of against the point of the thread.
I would have to agree with the small amount of spells being disappointing. It would be nice to see some more be brought over from older editions but mostly I just want more elemental spell options that aren't fire.
Maybe it's petty, but I'm least excited about the archiving of the UA on this site upon release
I mean, it is. The content was released in playtest and is now going to be official Wizards content. I don’t blame D&D Beyond at all for altering that now that the content is official and their license is with Wizards to recreate the official content.
To answer the OP, since this thread exists in many forms. I’m really just excited for the “leeway” given by Wizards for DMs to do more things by RAW. Patron switching, Subclass switching, things like that. They can make sense thematically but I understand the want by a lot of DMs to have a RAW mechanical foundation to allow such concepts.
The fact that they didn't use the class variant features to fix sorcerer. The base class is still a mess, and the origin spells should have been given to all its subclasses and not just the new ones.
To be honest, the only part of this I was still looking forward to at all was the Class Feature Variants, and the more I have read from the leaks, the less I even care about those. The more I read about Tasha’s the more I wish the entire book was just a bad dream I could wake up from and realize it isn’t real.

Wow, what happened? Were your expectations too high? Have the games you play in/run changed that you just don't see value in it anymore? Keep hope alive!

The last vestige of hope I had for Psionics in 5e is being flushed down the toilet....
I only care about 2, maybe 3 of the subclasses at all....
I think the lineage system is the worst thing to happen to D&D since WotC bought the IP....
I was hoping CFVs would fix certain things, but now they’ve been nerfed so hard that I honestly don’t give a shit anymore....
The only hope I could conceivably keep alive is that every leak and rumor is completely false and the book is 100% different than what everyone expects.
Honestly, the whole “optional this/variant that” nature of a lot of the book. I get that that’s part of the concept, but it’s so noncommittal. In my very personal opinion as a DM, getting a bunch of stuff that’s explicitly optional rather than getting a bunch of stuff (that’s still implicitly optional, as everything is) that feels like it’s on the same level as the core mechanics is somewhat annoying.

What I'm least excited about related to Tasha's is threads like this one, fishing for negativity and pushing it in everyone's face.
Seriously, we've had 35 megathreads about how much people hate the possibility of elves who have trained with weaponry their whole life getting +1 to STR or a dwarf who has studied for 100 years getting +1 to INT. That's clearly the answer with treatment of psionics coming in second.
I'm not saying we all need to mindlessly gush about how great every release is, but the fixation this site has had on hating the Tasha's changes have made this forum a noticeably more toxic environment. It's all been said so can we please talk about something else?
Think about it - metamagic adept feat means your one advantage and niche is now a commodity for all to buy. The Wizard’s little brother just got littler. Very appropriate that the class living in the wizard’s shadow got the Shadow Sorcery subclass.
Zero magic items for the monk, while it’s Christmas for other classes.
f I could get the Monk anything for Christmas though, it would be a d10 hit die and to let the poor bast**d choose their own two saving throw proficiencies.
For me, the things I was most excited about got hit the hardest.
The psionic power die...*might* survive in some capacity, but it's not gonna be the same.
Favored Foe has been nerfed into near oblivion. Still better than Favored Enemy, but that's more a testament to how useless that feature is than anything else.
The heavy armor invocation for Warlocks looks like it's been removed entirely.
I'm still gonna get the book. There's plenty that'll still be available for me to use, and I get that UA is intentionally overtuned and needs to be adjusted, but MAN they just went way overboard, and now I've gone from being jaded, to being hopeful, then back to being a jaded ornery cuss...
I think I'm least excited for the parts of the Class Feature Variants UA that aren't being implemented: things like spell versatility, the really interesting "Font of Magic" options for sorcerers, stuff like that.

Group patrons. I have never been interested in them.
It's nice to see that someone agrees with me! I mean, seriously, does this need to be a printed rule? I have been allowing my players to work for someone else for the longest time.

What I like about them is that they provide explicit examples of compensation and perks. In my mind, they're like magic items: any GM can make up whatever they want, obviously, but it's still useful to have some officially published templates.
The thing is, magic items have rules and effects on the game that need to playtested. Group patrons are just flavor. Sure they are nice templates, but I felt like the thirty pages of them in Eberron was excessive. (I think it was thirty pages?)
