After a long and difficult journey you have finally arrived. The town of Sel'eman was once a prosperous and powerful place. You may have read of the town itself, but more likely you've heard passing comments about what once stood here, the Coliseum of Conquest. In the ruins of the former city a new settlement has begun to grow. Many who had been lost in the catastrophe have returned and have begun to rebuild. Others, they say, were lost forever somewhere in time...

The partially collapsed ruins of the Coliseum dominate the southern end of Sel'eman. Splintered wood and tattered canvas litter the road outside the Coliseum where shops once peddled wares to spectators and tourists. Further off, near the former town's center, travelers have taken up residence in the abandoned buildings. The forges at the old armorer and weapon smith shops have grown cold, and the tinker's shop is earily quiet. Through the rutted streets, down the hill to the west, the docks sag into the sea. To the northeast a peaceful forest seems unaffected by the affairs of men. A river near the town, to the east, flows into the forest and ends in a brackish bog before it reaches the sea.
Upstream, beside the river, a hub of activity draws the attention of the new and veteran alike. The School of Abjuration and Protection Agency (SAPA), initially founded as a school of protective magic, it has grown, and now teaches the ways of combat in every form.
Inside SAPA, a sense of normalcy remains. Former competitors and new faces have become students and teachers of their craft. A tavern has been setup where people play games and listen to music. A stage stands at one end of the bar with a prep room in the back behind a curtain. Behind the bar a tabaxi with a scarred face and near permanent snarl ruins every drink he makes. Beside him a slightly more competant bartender is covered, every inch, from head to toe with dark green and grey cloth. Rather than prepare a customer's drink though, he seems to be pouring a glass for himself. Near the door a bulletin board is posted with a few ads and notices:
Posting 1: Hello all weathered and weary travelers. I thank you for your interest in our humble academy and welcome you to stay and learn all you can!
This though comes at a cost, as many things do, and that is sustainability. I know not what arrangement former owners had for stocking provisions. But since the calamity I doubt those deals or routes still stand. With this in mind I would ask that any who're brave enough venture out into the surrounding wilderness and hunt whatever provisions they can find. Coin will be paid for any donated to the Academy. Or you may keep your spoils for yourself.
The going rates are as follows: Small creatures will trade for 10 gp Medium creatures will trade for 40 gp Large creatures will trade for 120 gp Berries, Roots, and other Medicinal Herbs will trade for 25 gp a pound
It is not advised to go beyond any beast larger than an average beast of burden as such creatures are normally more of a hassle than they'll be worth.
Posting 2: This being a School we offer much more than trial by combat. As of now we are terribly short handed, but we aspire to grow and become a beacon of knowledge and bastion of safety for any on these grounds.
In that spirit if you find yourself tired of the traveled road feel free to become a professor here, teach on any subject you wish. Arcane, Cultural, Histories, Religions of far off lands, any and all knowledge is welcome here and encouraged to be shared.

Overlooking the settlement from SAPA, one can see arenas setup around the town. Various bouts are being fought between competitors in their own pitched battles. The battles can often be seen in person from the sidelines where, in some cases, bleachers have be erected for fans. In all cases the action can be viewed through magical scrying mirrors set up within the school. Students gather around to watch each fight and prepare for their own battles against these same competitors.
(If you have any details to add to this post, or notes your character would like to post I will add them here.)
As this community grows again we will benefit from additional DMs. If you feel you are up to the challenge instructions and discussion of the process can be found in The Aftermath:
If a player rolls a 1 the thief sneaks in the backway, avoiding the traps. The player proceeds to the troll
The Dealer rolls 2d4, the "Traps"
If the dealer rolls 7 or 8 the traps are high, and go over the thief's head. The players proceed
If the thief rolls higher than the traps he disables them, and the player proceeds. Otherwise, the player loses.
If the thief's roll matches the traps the thief finds the "Hoard", and the payout doubles.
The Dealer then rolls a d10 the "Troll"
On a 1 the troll kicks, and the players lose.
Otherwise, at this time the player may choose to double their bet in order to "Dash". They must re-roll the first thief (not against the traps)
The player must roll a second d6 (thief) attempting to beat the troll.
If the thief rolls 2 the "snake" scares the thieves away. The game is a push.
If the thieves' total is 11 or 12 they get the "Maw" and the thieves are eaten. The player loses.
If the thieves roll more than the troll (and not in the maw) the thieves escape with the treasure. The player wins.
If the thieves match the troll with the same value they hit the "Arrow" defeating the troll. The player wins and the payout doubles.
Chicanery:
Both players pay the ante and roll a d6. This is the 'Mark'. Each player has two six-sided dice and one four-sided die.
The objective is to beat your opponent's total. If you beat your opponent's total and don't exceed 10, or total less than 2, you win. If you exceed 10, you are 'Caught', less than 2 is 'Slow'
After the initial roll, each player may pay the ante again to roll a d4 either against or onto the opponent, either subtracting the value from their total or increasing their total respectively. This is a 'Trip' or 'Pull'. Anyone may choose to 'Stand', neither tripping or pulling, nor paying the ante.
Each player then choses to either roll their second d6 for their total, this is playing 'Straight' or pay the ante again in order to discard the first d6 rolling 2d6 (plus any trip or pull), this is using an 'Accompice'.
Both players roll for their total. The higher total wins unless it is greater than ten.
If the total is a tie or if both players are either 'caught' or 'slow' the game is a push and both players keep their bets.
Before the catastrophe that brought the fall of the Coliseum, The Glory of the Coliseum was described as follows:
A stunning young woman with straight blond hair and a clean, neat appearance greets you as you enter the tavern errected in the stands of the Coliseum. "Welcome to The Glory!" In one corner of the room another girl is lounging in a chair looking into a potted plant she's holding. Some of the patrons have armor or weapons. They appear to be contestants in the arena, as you may be. Even the bartender, a Dragonborn with blue hide, shows the strength of a combatant and the scars of battle. He's talking to a pair these contestants who've just stepped out of the back room, where you can here a gnome cackling as though working on some grand experiment. These two seem to run the place, a tall young human and a shifty green skinned Tiefling. The aroma of kafe and freshly baked bread float in from the kitchen, and you catch a glimpse of a kindly elderly woman through the swinging door. There are seats at the bar, several tables, and a row of stools where you could easily watch the action in the arena. There's also a magic mirror mounted by the bar that displays the battles through an Arcane Eye. In the rear is a raised section where some aristocratic folk sit. The steps are guarded by a velvet rope.
New in town or down on your luck and need to buy that fancy armor? Well come on down to Greycastle Loans and we'll find a payment plan that works for you!
The tavern is owned and operated by players (who had some coin to burn) Here is the initial description from the main thread. Current PC location, behavior, and condition will vary.)
New potential contestants arriving at the arena find the towering Coliseum full of spectators though there are still open seats scattered around.
A grumpy fellow sits in the shadow of a new looking structure. It looks like they're putting the finishing touches on a tavern overlooking the fights. Inside a gnome is tinkering with the taps, the kegs, the lights, whatever he can get his hands on. Two girls in their mid-late teens sit with a woman who may be too young to be their mother. They are joined by an excited 4-year old wearing a fancy fur coat. Employees are scattered around the Coliseum, helping patrons, keeping clean. (All proceeding are NPCs, some are not my NPCs.)
In front of the building an Orcish girl with red hair sits oiling a great sword. Nearby a goliath rests in the sun. He looks like he enjoyed a rough night. A man with a ledger seems like he'd take bets, but he doesn't seem to be getting much action right now. An elfish man in dark clothes carrying a trident stands near one entrance his eyes glow with a faint unnatural light.
A group of contestants in the arena is being introduced by an energetic announcer with puffy sleeves and a puffy mustache. Another group of fighters is just emerging from the last fight. They seem excited about their prizes.
The tavern is a cozy place with a roof that offers shade to the tired traveler . There are a few seats in one corner which offer a great view of the arena down below. These were at one point common seats for spectators. There are a good number of tables where contestants and non-contestants alike are sitting. There is a message board on a wall next to the bartender's table. Anyone can walk up to it and read it but the only message at the moment is a parchment that reads, "Welcome to The Glory," followed by a small list of the most popular items. A magic mirror offers a great view of the action down in the arena. A board listing contestant rankings suggests that this place also offers betting facilities. Fine smells of cooked meat and vegetables emanate from the other side of the closed kitchen doors. Sounds of machinery can also be heard but it's not very prominent or distracting.
... Up stairs... all the table are covered in beautiful white linen with flowers on every table. A buffet is set to the side with two attendants at each end. The ceiling is the same linen, but hanging gently over the banisters. The view is two times better than the lower tavern...
2 sets of stairs. One set leads to the VIP section. The second set of stairs leads directly to the 3rd floor. This place seems to be darker because the walls and the floor are colored with darker colors. There is a sky-light which will let sunlight in during the day and moonlight or starlight during the night. There will also be a second bar and lots of wooden tables and chairs
Another magic mirror is set up there at a place where everyone can see it.
Outside the Coliseum, which dominates the southern end of Sel'eman, there are stalls set up selling wares to visitors. A tailor sells patches with the Coliseum's sigil and icons representing various competitors. A baker sells sweet cakes, and a wood carver sells wooden swords for the children. Further off near the center of town are a tavern and an inn. Smoke rises from the forges at the armorer and weapon smith shops, and the occasional crash errupts from the tinker's shop. Through the cobbled streets down the hill to the west are the docks. To the north east is a quiet forest. A river near the town to the east flows into the forest and ends in a brackish bog before it reaches the sea.
When you enter his shop, armor will be located on the left, mainly half plate and full plate of different shapes, sizes, and designs. If your are in need for a fine weapon, head to the right side of the shop and peruse the fine selection they have. For a modest fee they also offer Adamantine coating for all types of weapons. Located along the back wall you will find the forge (where Rothander will more than likely be found)
A sign on the counter reads, "Ring bell for service." (PM Hillbilly79 if you require Rothander's services.)
(Original description for 'The girls' Adair is not wearing her armor now.)
Two strikingly beautiful human girls, probably in their mid to late teens. They don't appear the sort you typically see in this place. They are similar height and build both a bit over 5 feet tall. Both are quite thin, almost frail.
Their similarities only amplify their differences. One, blond and fair skinned, wears a set of Chausses and Greaves, apparently she has stopped in the middle of donning heavy armor to be introduced. She is dressed modestly otherwise. Her hair is clean and straight and its apparent she takes care to look neat. As she moves you can see she struggles a bit with the weight of half her armor. She carries an intricately carved wooden quarterstaff.
The other has short dark somewhat curly hair. She leans on a staff, or more like a loose tree branch. She has some soot smudged on one side of her face and wears a long tattered skirt and what's left of a shift. You can see she definately is not wearing armor. She does have a small wood shield tied to her back.
A human woman. Somewhat tall she has dark hair and fair skin. She wears a dark blue belted dress with black embroidery along the trim. She has a wry smile and her deep blue eyes betray her sharp wit.
Harmond wears long gloves, long pants and a full sleeved shirt. His helmet hides the upper part of his face along with his hair. A thin dark colored cloth is wrapped around the lower part of his face. This attire makes it next to impossible for anyone to detect any of his physical features such as Hair, facial features eye color even skin tone. Dark green and gray are the dominant colors of his attire. Some small bits of his armor are elegantly colored in bright yellow. These were his colors while he was a member of Hell Patrol
A great ball of roiling flames erupts from one of the buildings in town. The ground rattles beneath your feet with the sudden shock, and the girlish screams of children and gnomes fill the air. Patrons run to the windows to see what has occurred.
The main store house of Sel'eman has been destroyed. Is this the work of those drow? Has some prankster Wizard made a horrible mistake? This is no illusion.
People race through the streets. Fleeing the flames, searching for buckets, calling out for their children and loved ones. A moment of relative peace outside the walls of the arena has erupted into a scene of pure chaos.
Truth, Basil, and Jenkins spring into action. In the span of a moment they are out to confront this… event. Only a moment later another explosion… Time seems to crawl as the bridge into town is reduced to rubble. Then in the town square a shop bursts.
Violet light fills the air where the magic shop once stood. A cloud of chaotic arcane energy swirls, as it’s carried on an unfortunate wind toward the coliseum. Another cloud, a crimson red spreads like a malicious hand grasping at the homes of townsfolk. It stretches further and wraps around the coliseum where it mixes with the violet light.
Time seems to come to a stand still for a moment as a dark cloud fills the air...
A heartbeat passes, then a rush of wind carries the chaotic storm away in an unnatural gale. In the next moment all is still… but outside… something has changed.
-- A New Chapter in Your Story Begins Here --
The town is in shambles, not the result of the explosions, something more. In the span of a heartbeat to you, days, weeks, months even, have passed outside these walls. Shops have been looted. People cower in their homes. A once productive town has suffered long.
As the cloud dissipates people start to emerge, to investigate. Has their luck turned? Has relief come? Some walk in the streets toward the coliseum. Some carry weapons… A mob. They move with hungry faces ready to do what they feel they must.
So many questions are unanswered. What has occurred here in the time that has passed? How much time has passed? Was this an isolated incident? Or have other cities and towns suffered similar fates?
The strength and charisma and reassuring authority of those who once controlled this place are missing. Those who stormed out to offer aid on the outset of this catastrophe are nowhere to be seen. Were they victims of the chaos? Lost in some magical torrent? Killed by some explosion? One thing is sure, they are not here.
These people are without leadership. Some have fallen on hard times. Some have seized this opportunity. Some have fled, leaving their livlihoods behind. Some try to rebuild. Others thrive in the chaos.
This world is in the hands of the people now.

From here, this world is yours. My life has grown… interesting, and this game has grown too big for me to handle. I encourage you to continue the theme of this thread. I’d advise you to distribute duties associated with it rather than one of you taking it on as a whole. I also understand that this may spell the end for some, if not all of your adventures here. Your future is yet unwritten.
Thank you all for a great time. Your overwhelmingly positive response has been a delight for me. This game has been a bright light in what has otherwise been an… un-ideal two years. Thank you all again from the botom of my heart. I will still be around... Just with my new dramatically reduced availability. If you have any questions or comments for me I will get back to you. ...

(Here's the short of it: Last time on Coliseum of Conquest:
The couple headed out to the back of the Glory with Eldin to hand over the artifact. It was revealed that the woman didn't have a child at all but was actually hiding the artifact under her dress. But as they were about to give the artifact to Eldin, a mysterious hooded and masked figured jumped them from on top of a nearby building and the artifact rolled away under the stand.
As Eldin analyzes his options, Shmitty shows up. But wait! He is going after the artifact and has put his Hunter's Mark on the couple as the hooded figure escapes! Baryk follows him away to some unknown place while Eldin thanks Hades for having luck shine on him. OR SO HE THOUGHT! Seemingly out of nowhere, three more hooded figures appear and one makes off with the artifact while the others protect him. The figures and Shmitty open fire on the helpless couple who have taken cover behind a crate and are praying to the gods for their life.
Meanwhile, Eldin scales the building and cuts off the figure who tried to make off with the artifact from escaping. A giant spider with a gnome rider towards the scene.
Will Shmitty gain his master's favor? Will Eldin recover the artifact? Will the couple survive? Will Eldon Dimblesworth be able to stop 9-11? Find out now!
In the center of town, people step outside to investigate, as the earth rumbles beneath their feet.
Suddenly a shower of earth and stone sprays out and into the air. A Gargantuan eye-less snake burrows to the surface and burst out of its tunnel in the town square.
The creature squirms onward over the surface toward the Coliseum. Behind it others emerge from the tunnel. A second worm surfaces and moves for the docks and warehouses. Behind that a group of Giant Black Spiders and Drow.
The dark elves, aiming to beat the sunrise, get to their work. They break down doors or grab the people who've already come out to investigate, seeking quick and easy targets before returning to the tunnel.
Truth and Basil arrive quickly with Harmond, Daisy, and Adaire, but not quickly enough, they rush past the spiders, finding a brief opening and leap together into the impossibly deep, vertical hole to free the prisoners. Belle, the librarian was taken; and Sora, the dragonborn; Roondar, the brewmaster; Zalandra, the booky; Gurhilda, the cook; Copper, the accountant; Daroon, the tinker; and many others. They've all been taken below!
Before the Coliseum the Wizard Jenkins stands to confront the monstrous worm. He does not stamd alone, but all around him is chaos. The creature spins to strike with its tail stinger, and the image of the gnome bursts. An orifice in its tail gapes and a smaller Wormling is deposited. The Wizard Jenkins points, and the creature is incinerated in flames. He takes flight, and shouts over the town with the magically amplified effect, so commonly witnessed in the arena. He starts giving instructions, and commands, organizing the people. In short order, make shift barricades block streets, people are armed, positions are held, but the real battle lies with you.

"Wise decision, friend. Thank you," Garrock will say with a bow of his head as he pulls out some parchment and starts notating all the fighters he has witnessed and their ranking. "Now, I just need to know one thing, Josias. Are ye ready to become bloody rich?"
The twinkle in Garrocks eyes shows that he was very ready.
((OOG DM Gave me a decent listing of fighters wins and loses... it will take a little bit to make the listing. When it is done, I will post it here and in the Tavern. If your listing is wrong, please PM me so I can go over that information with the DM and fix the listing. Also, Odds will be on a different chart as per the matches being held. FYI, if you plan to bet you better have to coin to back it up. We will always pay out what is owed, so no worries about being ripped off. Later on once enough capital is earned, I will start doing loans. So, if you need coin for items or equipment, we will be able to help out. With a small amount of interest of course. ))

-- History --
Before the catastrophe that brought the fall of the Coliseum, The Glory of the Coliseum was described as follows:
Signs hang on the Bulletinboard:
(This is the RP thread for the Coliseum of Conquest: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/9701-coliseum-of-conquest [not active] Participation in the arena battles is not mandatory to participate in this thread. Spectate, gamble, socialize, or join in the arena as you wish.
The tavern is owned and operated by players (who had some coin to burn) Here is the initial description from the main thread. Current PC location, behavior, and condition will vary.)

A sign on the counter reads, "Ring bell for service." (PM Hillbilly79 if you require Rothander's services.)
(Original description for 'The girls' Adair is not wearing her armor now.)
(Truth, The Secretary)
(Harmond, the hunter)

Eldin looks over at the mirror. "Huh. Neat!"
He reaches into his bag and hands the secretary a pouch with 500 gold and says, "That should do it, right?"
(OOC: Is this for all RP? If it is, does all RP take place in the tavern, or can I expand it to the surrounding countryside and the town?)

In a quiet forest nearby you find a quiet clearing with a low-hill.

Viator makes a mental note of this location as a possibility, but will continue his search for something higher with a lot more wind. For now, he will head back to civilization, or the outskirts of it at least, to rest and await his next battle.

josias walks up to garrock well i think we can have a deal. since your doing a listing of the fighters anyways. could you make a board for the wall behind you of the ranking fighters. it could make things more interesting.
you some times you feel like hitting a human with another human
With a small amount of interest of course. ))
"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

Garrock finishes his first project of the day. Now that the board is complete he stares at it in complete awe. He does good work! He posts it on the wall inside the Glory and then takes the second board inside the Coliseum and posts it as well.
"This will bring in the coin, it will!" He walks back to the Glory to start setting up the odds for the next set of matches. The wheels were turning, time to make some money so he can move on to his next plan.

((OOG I see there are new faces in the fights. Once you have a record to post, it will be posted and updated. If I happen to miss you, please PM me so I can add your name to the list of warriors. Good luck out there, try not to lose too much; some of us might have a lot of coin riding on you! ))

An arena attendant slips into the tavern. As the battle continues below The Secretary waves him over. "The next fight will have some of the new fighters who started yesterday. See if you can't find Layla Madan, Gewonnt, Argoth, Marvarax, and Urrk. Let them know they'll be in the next fight."
